Somebody has to be the face, and somebody has to be the heel, but at the end of the day it's all an act and the conflict is just a performance for the audience.

Yeah, I did my time too. I wasn't some high speed lol-perator but I'd smoke cigarettes with them in the smoke pit. A lot of guys went to Afghanistan and got seriously fucked up or killed. And 20 years almost to the day after 9/11 I watched the Taliban take the country back like all we did there never even happened. The guy who was supposed to keep up with my additional duties while I was deployed didn't do jack shit and I got reamed by a Major for it during an inspection just days after getting back. Fun times.

What I really hate though is this retarded insistence by China that we pretend Taiwan isn't a separate polity from the Chinese mainland. I'm not going to help China make believe that they have sovereignty over that island. I'm not going to go along with their point at a deer, call it a horse bullshit. They don't run Taiwan, if they want to run Taiwan they need to invade the country and plant their flag on their capitol building.

@WashedOutGundamPilot @d0c40r0 When I was in tech school after basic, I was volun-told to help out with a special olympics event that the base was hosting. We were assigned an old guy with limited mental faculties who was put up in my dorm room. They at least gave us a cot for him. He was there for the weekend and the last day he threw up all over the bathroom floor. At least it was just the tile bathroom floor. OMG it was so foul, my roommate held up a box fan to blow fresh air into the room while I did the best I could to clean up the mess.

He asked if he could stay with us. I guess his normal minders weren't that nice to him. I told him sorry but he couldn't stay with us. I still remember his name.

Helping the nice people who care for special needs people sounds like a good idea. My church does something similar but for foster parents. Basically they have people go to foster parents homes and help them out with whatever they need. I would think that caretakers for downs kids and other special needs people need help even more.

@McMongoose @j @djsumdog I know a lot of utility workers. The plant that treats the water needs constant maintenance, lots of electricity and the chemicals needed to clean and decontaminate the water. It's not particularly cheap, especially the salaries of the workers keeping it all running. So say all you want how the water is your right. Someone has to pay for it, and if the workers do not get paid, they will not show up for work and then nobody gets water.

That said, everybody should know how to turn their water on and off. After all, sometimes you need to change out a water heater or maybe a pipe starts leaking and needs repair. You should also know how to turn the gas on and off if you have that too. Had a job done at the house once where the city worker forgot to turn the gas back on afterwards. This was summertime so I didn't notice until winter came and I was wondering why my gas heater didn't work. The valve was locked with this weird device that I did not have the tool for. But I was able to get it open with one of my deep sockets that was just about the right size. They even sell the tools for that too.

@veff @WashedOutGundamPilot @latein I was without a car for a week once while waiting for a repair part I ordered to be delivered (Oh, BTW fuck the USPS). I was lucky I had a motorcycle and the weather that week was just barely warm enough not to freeze to death commuting to work in the morning. Still, it sucked because my fairly sporty motorcycle didn't have hard case storage for fragile goods like eggs. Fortunately I have people who could give me a ride if I needed it. But that week reminded me of the old Honda PC800 from back in the 90s.

Honda had their automotive division design the body of that bike, and the back seat folded up to reveal a small trunk big enough to hold two grocery bags. The idea was a bike that had some of the perks of a car. Unfortunately it never sold well and was discontinued. But if you can find one close by they can be had for fairly cheap, for fairly low milage too. And motorcycles are much easier to work on than cars if you can get a decent front/back stand kit for it.

@deprecated_ii @Vril_Oreilly Yep, beancounters gonna beancount. My take is that the reduction in the number of competent and diligent workers is taxing the abilities of those remaining more and more. There's only so much the competent can keep up with, before they start missing something or making mistakes. It's harder when you have to keep one eye on your job, and the other on the retards who keep getting hired on.

@WashedOutGundamPilot @sjw They reached the limits with clock speeds 20 years ago. Now all they know how to do is process shrinks and adding more cores and cache. I only upgraded to a new system last year because I was running into driver support issues for my video card and figured if I'm getting a new card, might as well refresh the rest of the system.

@WashedOutGundamPilot @wgiwf IIRC, WW2 had a higher percentage of draftees serving than Vietnam. Also there was still enough trust of government and media that when Pearl Harbor happened people accepted that they were at war. Never mind the embargoes and provocations leading up to it. Today we don't have the trust we used to have.

@WashedOutGundamPilot I've seen this too, with contracting. Contractors will always find a way to finish a project without actually FINISHING it. Oh, the new facility they built is finally done. Too bad the thing can't run for six months without literally destroying itself. They hold endless meetings with the government stakeholders that lead to nothing, until they finally just give up and sign off on it to make the assholes go away. And they still get the next contract.

This is the reason we can't scale our production of weapons and munitions. Too many greedy corporate and even small scale businesses just want to scam and extract as much as they can, without providing anything good in return. I hate capitalism now.
