My issues with Christianity at least in it’s pure literal form is that it’s based on slave morality which is, inherently, communist in nature.
- We are all God’s children and thus all equal - The meek shall inherit the Earth - It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye if a needle than a rich man to get into heaven - If you want to be perfect, sell all your possessions, give it all to the poor and follow me.
This is why when the first pilgrims came here they almost starved. They set up a utopian commune..with the expected results.
There’s a reason it came up through the slave class. These messages are an easy sell to them.
That’s not to say all their ideas are bad. And if you are willing to do some interpretation of the Bible and take it in a more metaphorical sense, it’s mostly harmless. But the literalists, like most religious literalists, do the belief system a lot of damage.
You draw lines when you have actual harm to kids. That’s why child porn is illegal. You can’t make it without harming children.
And the vast majority of porn consumers never go near that path. Just like the vast majority of alcohol drinkers are not alcoholics. You don’t ban booze because some people can’t handle their liquor. We tired that. It caused more problems than it solved. You would have the same results here.
Focus enforcement on the truly criminal and leave everyone else alone.
I guess the best way to stop the murdering of children is to ban all murder.
If something is already illegal, you don’t fix it by making something adjacent to it illegal. It’s almost like criminals don’t care that it’s illegal.
Not to mention the endless arguments over what is porn exactly.
My point is not to advocate for porn but rather to show that more banning of things that aren’t child porn won’t fix the actual problem of child porn. All you will accomplish is to make millions upon million of harmless people criminals while not stopping child porn at all.
If your goal is to make mainstream porn less profitable, the Internet already did that. Amateurs are giving it away for free makes it tougher to earn a living selling it. The Internet is also why you won’t have much success keeping it from people. It’s really tough when you don’t need to get a physical item like a gun, a drink, or a pill. And we can’t effectively stop those things from being sold…not even in prisons. Do you really think you will stop people from accessing porn on the Internet?
Most of your moral arguments were also used by the prohibitionists. Alcohol was harming families and, ultimately, children.
Thankfully I never had a Twitter account so I lose exactly zero interactions by being here. The handful of accounts I like to read from there get sent to my instance via a bot I maintain. I had a gap until nitter started working again but since it’s read only for me anyway it wasn’t too bad. And it’s literally less than 20 accounts.
I actually prefer not knowing the people with whom I interact on here in real life. Most of my IRL folks are quite normy and would likely just get upset when I occasionally toss out an unpopular opinion about something. That was my experience on FB back when I was active over there. Here I tend to get better engagement and I don’t have any IRL drama. And, frankly the quality of the conversations are better.
Yeah the Great Wall of Mastodon is a thing. Blocks should be left up to users rather than instances. Instance blocks should be a truly last resort, IMHO. I’m taking illegal content like child porn, etc.
But that’s just my opinion. That’s not the reality of the Fediverse. It is what it is. Overall, I like it here. The ability to run my own instance is very appealing to me.
Getting blocked doesn’t bother me. I’m pretty milquetoast in my opinion and am open to different ideas.
The 150 or so instances that have blocked me so far fall into 2 categories:
1. Instances that are so narrow minded that they can’t stand anyone who might disagree with them in any way.
2. Instances that blindly block from some of the big block lists. These folks have likely never seen anything from my instance.
Either way while it’s unfortunate that they decided to block me, it’s not truly a problem for me and it certainly doesn’t hurt. It’s a big internet out there. You can’t please everyone.
Keep in mind you, as the user, have tools to moderate your own feed. You can block and mute literally anything you want. No need for an admin to do it for you.
The membership is worth it. I’ve got Plex and Jellyfin running and while I appreciate Jellyfin being open source and under my full control, Plex has a really good interface and just works.
Let me tell you the struggle is real. I go to an Indian or Thai place and tell them to make it spicy and they take one look at me and....let's just say, I get racially profiled. One of the few things I like about visiting the SF Bay area is that tends to not happen as much as other places.
I did get to prove it in India when I was there. The local colleagues didn't believe I could handle real Indian food. I did my best to shatter their prejudices. :)
The difference? Well, in reality, it’s up to interpretation. But even if you take the 2A very literally there are cases where people can lose rights (e.g, felons, insane, children). And there are times when rights collide (e.g. property rights). Then there’s regulation: at what point does regulation become infringement? That an open question.
@PhenomX6@CumskinFoidPuncher69420 Give them time. Most of the newbies don’t realize there are different software options. Most of the ones I have found that care are just looking for an exclude to block my instance because they don’t like what I run.
The bigger reason for the population crunch in the west is the empowerment of women. When you give women choices, they make them. This sounds controversial to many but when you look at papers talking about how to deal with the 3rd world population booms, empowering women is always at or near the top of the list. But for some reason when you suggest that it’s the reason for first world extinction, people get mad and start calling you an istphobe. Go figure.
@PhenomX6@houseoftolstoy@deprecated_ii@Binkle@creamqueen Non-commercial diesel has never really worked in the US because we don’t tax gasoline like Europe does. It makes sense for heavy commercial vehicles due to the power needed to haul big loads but it’s a bit of a cult following in the US for cars.
@deprecated_ii@creamqueen@Binkle@houseoftolstoy I drive a 2006 SUV. Was pricey at the time but I haven’t had a car payment since 2009 (did a 5 year loan and paid it off in 3). I put on average $800/year into it for upkeep. Anyone saying that it’s cheaper to trade it in is stupid. They are trying to rationalize doing what they want to do.
