98% of the time, my instance is blocked because of the name alone even though the majority of the timeline is @p talking about coding. 2% of the time is a Mastotard who's too stupid to figure out how to block users.

Either way, I'm missing absolutely nothing by not engaging with them because those kinds of people are mind-numbingly boring and stupid, but the point about it breaking the fediverse is still a good one. I'm just not a narcissist who thinks it's not a problem if it doesn't affect me.

On the one hand, it actually improves my experience, as I have yet to see anything interesting/thought-provoking from any mastodon.social user and my timeline is spared from their dull navel-gazing. On the other, fediverse fracturing makes it more difficult for me to wean Twitter users because they can't simply pick an open instance to talk to me, so they just stay on Twitter because they can't see the benefit of moving. (To be fair, Twitter runs on inertia so it's difficult to pry users off it as it is, it's just fediverse fracturing kneecaps what would otherwise be a compelling draw) If it wasn't for trying to drag some normies here, it would just be another case of not my circus, not my monkeys.
