     @EvilSandmich @deprecated_ii @Binkle @creamqueen the last time I got a different car it's because the mpg on my old car was insanely shit so I got a car with 40mpg highway and I don't think I'm going to be selling this one for a decade or so.

     @creamqueen @Binkle @deprecated_ii I once knew a guy who made like $120K a year but him and his wife were perpetually broke because they would A) get a fancy car and then B) Get sick of fancy car before the loan was done and then get a new car with the loan balance *on the old car* folded into the new loan.
     
     I've bought both new and used but generally prefer new when I can afford it because those "new" years are the best years on the car. I've been broken down on the side of the road *a lot* and get leery of driving cars with a lot beyond 100K on them. People without "breakdown trauma" have no issue with +200K, I wish I was one of them but I'm not.

     There are plenty of sedans out there. Wagons got consumed by a combo of SUVs and minivans. The car makers are just making what people want.

     I drive a 2006 SUV. Was pricey at the time but I haven’t had a car payment since 2009 (did a 5 year loan and paid it off in 3). I put on average $800/year into it for upkeep. Anyone saying that it’s cheaper to trade it in is stupid. They are trying to rationalize doing what they want to do.

     @creamqueen @deprecated_ii @Binkle You are right, they do not afford it properly. They justify it with all sorts of excuses, but the real reason is to put up appearances for other people, as almost nobody actually needs a new car every 4 years.

     It is even worse if it is a finacially illiterate wife demanding a new car, because she will make an even bigger deal out of having the latest car than the average person. Or the young man who thinks he should have a new car to attract women.

     @Binkle @creamqueen @deprecated_ii Mid 90s cars are well engineered enough to only require brake pads and fluids for 50k+ miles, and if you own some tools and can follow along with he youtube videos even major parts replacements can be done for a couple hundred bucks.

     idgi my car is ancient at this point and the maintenance on it is almost nothing
