It's interesting how much the #fediverse is in denial of these things:
1. Big Social is bigger for a reason: you can reach audience, share information, and maintain networks. This is what normal people use the internet for.
2. The Fediverse has failed to attain that status for the same reason FOSS lingers in the dark: they did what they were comfortable doing and went no further.
3. Free speech is a binary. Other than spam and CP, everything has to be included... or you go down the path of Big Social. No one will notice because they are dumb but utility will decrease. Unfortunately, this requires tolerating both poa.st and brony.social.

Just looking for an example out of curiosity. Didn't mean to put you out.
I sense that the "Monday is coming" vibe has descended on the #Fediverse, a failed Twitter clone :)

It's not about you. It's about an audience.
Let's start there.
You need maybe 30-300k readers to break even depending on the size of your paper.
You aim for the largest audience segment you can.

Do you have a link to a bot on Gab?

Not just FOSS vanity projects, but even the quality of art, photography, and writing here is generally abysmal.
If we are going to be honest... well, one should always be honest. There's a reason big social is kicking our asses.

I think it is easy to confuse activity with actual human participation.
How many of these instances endure, and how many are basically just spam?

They have connected with their audience and cultivated it.
Same way that ZeroHedge did.
But to connect with an audience, sites need to be visible.
With a stream of equal data going past, nothing rises to the top.

Papers vary, but the audience for newspapers in general -- which is now global -- needs to focus on a fifth-grade reading level or it cuts out too many people.
Maybe the WSJ has smarter readers; I would like to think so. But even they dumb it down a lot these days.

And as you know, I enjoy that, but I think the larger point stands: outside the cafeteria smoking cloves.
While the big show goes on elsewhere.
The power of the internet was that geographically and socially isolated people could be part of the discussion.
What I see instead is niche culture that has made itself inconsequential.

The average reader is at a fifth-grade level.
Whether an idiot or not, they are generally reading for recreation.
They take it correspondingly seriously.

I'm all for admitting the general public are morons or worse, incurious and apathetic, but no, I think there's more traction at Gab for a reason.
-

No, I think a post on Gab goes farther because it finds an audience.
On the Fediverse, most people appear to be posting into the void.
Very little actual interaction, and it comes from a tiny portion of the userbase.

Fedi is the space out behind the cafeteria where the uncool kids go to smoke.
They have freedom; they are also irrelevant.
Gab gets more focus than this place because it concentrates an audience.
Fedi is just lots of FOSS people posting updates no one reads into the aether.

it's time to sodomize the WEAK

@ArdainianRight @ChristiJunior @Typicalgamergirl @helldiverliberator @ins0mniak
why blame the homosexuals when liberalism is obviously at fault
humans are big ego pricks who cannot admit individualism is retarded

@Hoss @dcc @0 @eriner @istvan @viber @dj @FourOh-LLC
I wanted to double underline this. Anonymity is necessary for honest speech because (a) censorship targets unpopular speech and (b) realistic and accurate observations are often unsociable (!!!) and would cause the speakers loss of friends, business partners, wives, girlfriends, sheep, etc.

I think I can get onboard with Prude Pride. Sex is another addiction, and sexing stuff up is more manipulation.

@sim @FeartnTired
People keep looking for excitement, but it lets them down.
The wholesome lets people get over their desires and get on to real life.
-
@sim @FeartnTired
It is a different kind of exciting.
Appetitive stuff is surface exciting.
The wholesome stuff is appealing at a level closer to transcendence.
Most of what people obsess about is a distraction/deflection from what they need, not a fulfillment of it.

@sim @FeartnTired
Probably granular. I distinguish between art and entertainment although there is overlap.
For example, DEICIDE is more on the art side of the spectrum the CANNIBAL CORPSE or PANTERA (eww).
