sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Saturday, 08-Apr-2023 23:09:19 JST sj_zero I sorta feel like the Tuskegee Syphillis experiment should be the final word in "The Government wouldn't do that".
1. It's totally monstrous.
2. It wasn't some flash in the pan "well we decided to do a thing but we stopped right away", they did this monstrous thing for 40 years.
3. They had opportunities to end it but decided not to. A "Mere" 28 years in one worker said "Hey, we should stop this it's monstrous" and they refused to after forming a committee.
4. Everyone agrees it happened.
Shooting a powerful guy is bad, but watching hundreds of innocent people suffer, die and pass on to their wives and children a treatable disease for 40 years while lying to them about treating them because you're curious to see what it looks like is on a level where all manner of evil is totally acceptable.
They see us as state property to be disposed of as they wish. -

sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Thursday, 06-Apr-2023 05:54:10 JST sj_zero As a general rule, trying to convince everyone on earth that you're right one person at a time is absurd. If you're in a smaller zone you might be able to convince the people around you if it's something arguable, but you won't convince the earth.
So why argue? In my view, the purpose is to find out if you're fully correct. Good arguments may or may not convince other people, but you can find out if you're personally wrong. Maybe the other person doesn't win the argument, but maybe they have some points you need to consider to have a fully cultivated worldview. Steel sharpens steel. -
sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Tuesday, 04-Apr-2023 11:59:51 JST sj_zero If you go back 1000 years to central America, there were all kinds of "experts" with literally books full of data saying that if you didn't keep on sacrificing people to the Gods, the sun would decide not to rise anymore (almost all remaining books from the time and place are about this topic). A lot of people would get very worked up if you said that maybe you didn't need to sacrifice people to keep the sun from rising. I'm sure they'd explain in detail what would happen if the sun stopped rising and why we must continue to sacrifice people. -

sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Tuesday, 21-Mar-2023 07:05:06 JST sj_zero I'm not CS/IT, but I'm adjacent to both. I haven't been impressed with the code I've asked chatgpt to write. Often it produces code that won't even compile, it doesn't know APIs so it just makes shit up that seems like it should be right, and it seems to spit out exactly what I'd expect from an algorithm designed to make stuff that looks like it should be correct but doesn't need to be.
If this level of work represents the base level from a CompSci student in 2023, then most CompSci students should have been failed out of their respective programs. -
sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Saturday, 18-Mar-2023 01:41:58 JST sj_zero With media in general controlled by adverse parties, there's a lot of bad lessons being taught to men and women.
You can take your wooden sword and swing it 6,000 times per day for 10 years, but it won't help you get a single question right on a calculus exam!
Meanwhile, nobody on earth can pass a calculus exam having never learned numbers. Studying for the exam isn't evil, and nobody will pass the exam because they're just inherently good.
Yet we teach women to pursue self-improvement that's meaningless for their goals, and we teach women that they're already good enough and they don't need to change themselves at all anyway, and we teach men that their worth is set from birth and that improving themselves is evil.
Then you get stuff like this thread is about because they do want better than the losers they find themselves around, but the problem is that by demanding unrealistic men, you'll get one in a million supermen, and 999,999 liars. -
sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2023 04:03:08 JST sj_zero It was scary when I wrote it, it was scary when I read it back to edit it, it was scary when I went back to check the audio book, the idea in The Graysonian Ethic's chapter called "Build something" that while it might feel great not to have a family in your 20s, someday if you don't spend your life building something real you might be all alone, cold, incompetent, and your final moments you'll reach out for a hand that will never be there because you didn't bother building anything and the last time anyone ever thinks of you is your landlord cursing you for the burden you've left. -

Because a guy's bros will congratulate him for success, and a chick's sisters will shame her for hers.
Not saying that ultimately that sort of success is fulfilling in the long term, but that's why the two divergent attitudes exist. -
sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Monday, 13-Mar-2023 04:42:53 JST sj_zero I bought my son a book called 365 bedtime stories. I liked it because the data shows that having 500 books that are age-appropriate is equivalent to having a four-year degree at the end of their childhood in terms of benefit. I have tons of other books, they are everywhere, but I thought that one book that has 365 books worth of stories sounds like a good deal.
Anyway, on to my actual point. One of the stories was about a hen who found some wheat seeds. She decided to go plant the seeds, and ask if anyone would help her plant them. Everyone said no. Later, she asked if anyone would help her harvest the seeds, and everyone said no. After that, she asked if anyone would help her take the harvest to the mill, and everyone said no. Finally, she asked if anyone would help her bake the bread, and everyone said no. After all this, she asked if anyone would like to help eat the bread. Of course everyone said yes. And the hen angrily told them to fuck off, she and her chicks ate the bread and it was great.
I really like that story, I think it's the sort of story that you should tell kids. -
