Looks so deceptively open to the naive eye, but is a huge trap of walled garden lock-in, esp. with all the stuff that's being added right now to this all-pervasive platform.
#FreeYourCode or otherwise #GiveUpGithub I'd say to all the many governmental institutions in the #EU that are considering it in their - well-meant - efforts to move towards #FOSS. Before the next problem is at your doorstep.
@atomicpoet I wouldn't say I am worried. This was bound to happen one day.
But I am disappointed that in all the years before the grassroots #FOSS movement wasn't able to create stronger foundations that would place them in a better position than they are now.
It is a fact of life, I know. #FreeSoftware has a big sustainability issue that is very hard to tackle.
If #Fediverse is taken over by the corporate world, FOSS projects are left to add to that or explore new areas to be captured later.
I see #SmallWeb more as a philosophy. A means of approaching technology and build things in ways that are more in tune with what people actually need. The human-scale web.
Aral is building comprehensive and intuitive tools that conform to this philosophy. That's all. This is not about the Nth protocol.. that's tech details.
My view is that hybrid #decentralization is where we'll go. Having both federated services as well as #p2p cients and they each have their own use cases where they shine.
I can't remember all the #BigTech tools we had to use during DAPSI. But they included Zoom, Sharepoint, GoToMeeting, Google Hangouts / Docs / Forms and more.
Besides the #privacy issues, and the fact that some of these don't work well on #Linux, it killed collaboration between selected teams. The program might have a dedicated VPS with #Matrix, #Discourse and #Jitsi on it.
That is also a good argument. The legal status of the license in court is less relevent here, but by using it you clearly state your intent wrt monetization.
And Fair Use mentioned by Andrew is also dubious in many cases. I think of e.g. Google Books and Github CoPilot, for instance.
I noticed that @aral on his personal site https://ar.al uses CC-BY-NC-SA for all post content, which is also an interesting choice.
At various times I was in doubt whether to choose that too, or go with CC-BY-SA for personal stuff. I've yet to find a good summary of considerations as guidance to help make this choice.
The list is maintained by @caesar ๐ and lists many interesting #FOSS projects and resources related to @forgejo
For those not in the know.. https://forgejo.org is the recently launched community-driven soft fork of #Gitea. And its the code forge software that #Codeberg is based on.
Check the list and PR any project's still missing.
