I’d recommend looking up some routines on YouTube, it can give you some ideas on what to work out as well as proper form guidance. Find a youtuber that you like and just look up some routines they post online. Dumbbells are better than machines because you can work out your stabilizer muscles that you can’t get only working out isolated muscle groups on a machine.

When you’re lifting at heavier ranges though especially if your muscles aren’t sufficiently developed yet you can open yourself up to torn ligaments or other joint/muscular injuries. Starting light just helps to build a base with the lowest risk of injury.

So long as you exercise your muscles to failure consistently you should expect to see results within a month or so. You can focus on increasing muscles first and the increase in metabolism will help you lose weight.
