They're always so angry about incredibly tame remarks from people like Scott Adams and, before him, John Derbyshire.
SA: a significant portion of black people hate that white people even exist, so avoid them for your own protection.
Not "beat them up", "steal their stuff", "raise minimum wage laws to prevent their youth from getting employed", etc. Just: "hey, live somewhere else", "spare black people the offense of your physical presence".
JD: there are all these "the talk" articles about black mothers having to give grim advice (and usually bad advice, not like Chris Rock's) to their children. So here's a "the talk" for other race's children, largely "be really careful about black people".
It's racist? OK. Then it's white racists telling white racists to not be racist around black people. Is that really so offensive?
No, they're always so angry about episodes like this because it completely inverts their religion of blacks always suffering and being downtrodden, which religion makes shining, righteous heroes out of them for saying bold things like "I think slavery is BAD".
Since they hate whites, there's no righteousness in "I think opportunistically murdering white people is BAD", so they don't want to hear about it. -

b. "dragon attack survivor"?! THIS IS BLAMING THE VICTIM - the dragon. Bilbo invaded the dragon's lair for the purpose of stealing his treasure, and set off a chain of events leading to the dragon's death, in an otherwise completely peaceful area. Like the police entering a black neighborhood, all Bilbo had to do was stay away and nothing bad would have happened. Three months ago, that dragon laid down to sleep, and on the very day he awoke, he was murdered. Gandalf's little display is a further abuse, parading the image of the murdered before the murderer's extended family for their sick amusement. -

@ChristiJunior @sharutiaburaddofouren the older alternative was to default to "she" in some cases, or to declare the sexes of imaginary stand-ins. There are some technical programming books that state in the introduction that the editor is assumed male, the tech writer is assumed female, etc., and that there's nothing to these decisions other than to be 'inclusive' while being easy to read.
With "they they they they they they", none of these people care about text being easy to read anymore. They'll haphazardly mix plural and singular they in the same paragraph, and they'll repeat "they" more than anyone would use a pronoun to begin with, just to make sure you noticed it. -

... well, yes. Entirely by correspondence, with periodicals at the center. Interesting research for someone, there: what was the first 'online-only' insane movement, that would've obviously long self-destructed if prospective members could see the lives of existing members? Women's liberation? Something in ancient Greece? -

@ryan @1iceloops123 @coolboymew @mangeurdenuage @noyoushutthefuckupdad and, like with J-Novel translators breaking out the 'they' given the slightest excuse, I think it's intentional. These translators are fighting some kind of moral fight for "the nonbinary", or just jacking themselves off into their work, while I just want to watch the anime of the #1 best isekai that I've been reading for years.
Pic: the first 'they' refers to the community in general. The last 'they' refers to Stunk and Zel. All the interim theys are about Crim, an angel with both sex organs whose entire backstory is that he panicked and said he was male because he was afraid that the pervy-looking pair would molest him otherwise. There's all kinds of comic gay suspicion for Crim that only makes sense if everyone sees him as male, but the translator knows Crim's a hermaphrodite so out come the pronouns. -

That's not the same thing as assigning it as a pronoun for something, and using it repeatedly. This anime, and pic related, and more, would all have been written normally even ten years ago. This bullshit is extremely novel.

@1iceloops123 @coolboymew @mangeurdenuage @noyoushutthefuckupdad actually that was me hating this dialect so much that I accidentally made it better, by having 'they' while insisting on singular grammar outside of it.
The actual translations go "They're good at sewing.", keeping plural agreement through the sentence, which suggests that there are multiple people who are good at sewing, or that Zabuton is a superorganism comprised of independently sentient legs and spider aprts, but it's just Zabuton who's good at sewing. -

In the worst case for a translator, with no information, with no clues or way to ask about the sex of the spider, there might have to be some awkward rephrasing to avoid using pronouns at all, by saying "Zabuton" a lot.
But never, ever, ever "Zabuton came. They is good at sewing." That's not English. -

There's a "spirit of the wind" that technically isn't a biological creature? Give it they/them pronouns! A woman is introduced one paragraph before her sex is clearly established? Call it a 'they' in that first paragraph like the people in the world can't see with their own eyes that it's a woman!
J-Novel has excellent taste in books to translate, but I hate them now. I can't buy a J-Novel book anymore without making a bet with myself, like "if there's a gratuitous they/them in this book I have to do push-ups every day of the week"
