  I first noticed it watching some Mario Maker 2 videos, and suddenly this Alpharad faggot kept referring to pretty much every single level creator as they, which I instinctively found revolting. Not much later, watching Smash Ultimate tournaments certain commentators (often brand new ones who I had never seen before) would keep referring to every single player as they, I guess the initial excuse was online tournaments and not knowing who many of the players were, but of course they kept doing it post-lockdown, and also doing it to well-established players everyone knows are male.

It's happened with way too artificially inflated of a frequency as of late.   I can tell there some shady shit going on behind the scenes with this. Email lists and discords and other crap where people are being instructed to speak in this manner. That's the particularly telling part is you notice when a person starts talking differently like they've been coached or are under someone's influence. Beyond just aping a catchphrase from some youtuber, it's like watching someone lie to themselves out loud and desperately hoping that you'll buy into the lie along with them because they don't want the reality or are too afraid to state the obvious or be real
