A discussion about cars just reminded me of the concept of sumptuary laws:
“Black’s Law Dictionary defines them as ‘Laws made for the purpose of restraining luxury or extravagance, particularly against inordinate expenditures for apparel, food, furniture, or shoes, etc.’”
And these are exactly what the US ruling trash are doing to us, except it’s household appliances that do their jobs like washing machines, dishwashers (remember Trump grumbling about them but doing nothing?), gas stoves that put out enough heat.
Soon internal combustion engine cars and 24x7 electrical service, perhaps also like in some of Europe enough energy to keep you warm in winter. Maybe also generators to tide you over during the coming rolling blackouts.
Other appliances plus some of the above are being regulated into extremely expensive versions, like hot water heaters using a heat pump instead of (granted, very wasteful) resistive heating. I suspect plenty of people won’t be able to afford these.
And now they’re talking about giving everyone alpha-gal syndrome allergies to meat….
Wikipedia then goes on to perhaps credibly claim:
“Historically, they were intended to regulate and reinforce social hierarchies and morals through restrictions on clothing, food, and luxury expenditures, often depending on a person’s social rank.”
Tell me there’s not a lot of that going on…. Look at Nancy Pelosi’s over $10K worth of fancy freezers stocked with lots of ice cream. Milk, yeah, that’s White Supremacist and bad for the environment unless you buy indulgences like she has.
