Anyone who grew up "in the system" and joined the military, who never had any exposure to an outsider's thoughts, truly believes that Ukraine is in the right, that Russia is pure evil, that this is a fight for freedom and justice, and that America can't lose. They believe this, not because they came to that conclusion on their own, but because people who seem "trustworthy" (celebrities, politicians who sort of look and act like them, etc.) say all that stuff.

    @threalist @DW2 @KarlDahl @WashedOutGundamPilot I usually like to blame Facebook for turning the very concept of "friendship" into a product to be sold to marketers, but they really just exploited a weakness that society has had for a very long time.

    I've heard tales of the times before TV, and even before radio. In the evenings, neighbors would go over to one another's porches and just talk or play card games or whatever. Maybe that's why so many of those 50s-70s TV shows center around some core group of characters sitting in a room talking; it's a distant reflection of what life was like before those shows.

    Unfortunately, as long as the internet is up, we'll never know our neighbors again the way we used to.
