     Pro-social organizations were replaced with sportsball during our lifetimes. Sports present the illusion of an organization, but in reality it's a bunch of individuals and their parents out there thinking of their own futures and not the teams, beyond the season they are on the team
     
     There are exceptions of course - I'm attempting to develop a parallel institution but it's hard because it really requires roots and a sense of belonging, which is now alien

     @threalist @DW2 @KarlDahl @WashedOutGundamPilot I usually like to blame Facebook for turning the very concept of "friendship" into a product to be sold to marketers, but they really just exploited a weakness that society has had for a very long time.
     
     I've heard tales of the times before TV, and even before radio. In the evenings, neighbors would go over to one another's porches and just talk or play card games or whatever. Maybe that's why so many of those 50s-70s TV shows center around some core group of characters sitting in a room talking; it's a distant reflection of what life was like before those shows.
     
     Unfortunately, as long as the internet is up, we'll never know our neighbors again the way we used to.

     Also social bonding is largely workplace and mass-entertainment based.

     @DW2 @KarlDahl I hate that “gritty crime show” scene almost as much as chicks & their tru-crime nonsense. There’s something so caged and effete about loving it, this ivory tower faggot vibe where they can pretend to be cool and badass by imbibing (a fantasy version of) street-level poverty and ruthlessness.

     People who DO have experience in that world don’t like dipping their toes back in that pool. The last thing I wanna drink in my time off is realistic, depressing depictions of human suffering.

     No, what he's saying is families and communities used to participate in boy scouts, or archery clubs, or church groups, or rotary clubs, hiking, camping, swimming etc. These were all group activities you would raise your children in. Instead, it's all been replaced by the religion of sportsball now.
