A beluga can change the shape of its "melon" (the bulbous mass on its head) at will. Could this be used as a form of communication? A new study indicates that it might. Here's a story from @hakaimagazine with a six-panel comic illustrating the five different melon shapes and in what contexts some are used.
Indigenous languages are founts of environmental knowledge.

AI has much to offer. Yet, we want to ensure it happens responsibly.
On top of the world-first #AI Act and cutting-edge supercomputers, we are taking action to boost innovation, including:
🔸 setting up AI Factories to support European start-ups and SMEs; 🔹 an AI Office to oversee the implementation and enforcement of the AI Act; 🔸 language data to boost #language model development.

Christi JuniorWhy I always say "Injun" instead of "Indian" or "Native American": I usually embrace politically incorrect/offensive language, but I also value clarity and accuracy in terms of the words I choose. "Indian" doesn't clear that bar, since it can easily cause confusion between Alcoholics and Streetshitters. Meanwhile, "Native American" is just straight up Fagspeak as far as I'm concerned. "Injun" gets it clearly across which group I'm referring to, is at the very least vaguely offensive, and is just a fun word to say. You could argue that I should just go with "Redskin", but I dunno, that just sounds kinda goofy to me, and gives the Injuns too much credit - they're more shitskins than redskins, really :shrug4:
You just can't minimise what it means to delete a brand like Twitter. Language is fundamental to our experience of the digital world. More than its name, the concept of a 'tweet' has become so simple as a reference. Changing that to 'a post on X' really does make that platform lose a touchstone and become Just Another Platform in the wide world of socials. #twitter#x#socialmedia#media#language
