Kenya has about 40,000 “shadow scholars” who are paid by university students in Western countries to write their essays. @thecontinent reviews a new documentary, “The Shadow Scholars,” about this industry, which is directed by Eloïse King in collaboration with Oxford scholar Patricia Kingori. “Kingori’s scholarship is interested in teasing out how power dynamics shape the past, present and future of the global order. In this case, she is appalled by how easily the efforts of these young Kenyans are erased as they go uncredited for their intellectual output – an erasure with loud echoes in history,” writes Wilfred Okiche

Unidentified #hackers reportedly accessed the Berlin International #Film #Festival’s (#Berlinale) Instagram account and posted infographics calling for a #ceasefire in #Gaza. Though the organization immediately deleted the posts and published a notice disavowing the statement, screenshots had already gone viral on social media, adding fuel to the festival’s controversy as several #German officials have publicly denounced several category winners for calling for a ceasefire in their closing ceremony speeches.
A number of Berlinale’s own workers issued a statement calling for a ceasefire in Gaza earlier this month, followed by over 100 participating filmmakers across various categories signing off on a list of demands for the festival to acknowledge the artists who withdrew their entries and to “confront censorship and the silencing of critical perspectives in the cultural sector in Germany,” among other points.

Long before Photoshop, there was my father and scotch tape. This is from his scrapbook, taken on a trip Dad took with my mother one summer when they headed up the coast from San Diego to San Francisco.

Dad always had his Minolta and his flask by his side.

Our brains have to work hard when we watch movies — to observe what's happening on screen, interpret the dialogue and follow the plots. Now, Popular Science reports on MIT research into how different movies show up on MRI scans. The team used a previously collected dataset including whole-brain scans from 176 adults who watched 60 minutes' worth of clips. "When the film’s content was difficult to follow or more ambiguous like during 'Inception,' activity was heightened in executive control brain regions. However, during more easy to understand scenes, the brain regions with specific functions — such as language processing — were the most dominated," writes Laura Baisas. Just watched Mean Girls the film of the musical and… wow. I’d put it up there with Hair. I hadn’t realised the musical was so good but also the film adaptation is just a modern masterclass in how to do a musical justice in film.
