The "shut down the shop and ground all the planes it worked on until the missing tool is found" is a policy that probably was created after a few planes fell out of the sky when someone left a wrench in the jet engine air intake.

Could very well be that they looked at the cost of hiring lawyers and found that $2.4 million was less than what they were being told legal fees would be if they fought.

Random access means the data can be accessed in any order. This is in contrast to memory drvices like tape drives that are linear access (start tape drive then wait for the data you want to show up at the read head).

DRAM or Dynamic Random Access Memory is a way of builting memory devices from a capacitor and a transistor where the data slowly erases itself and periodically has to be read and rewritten. It has the advantage of taking less space per bit so you get more bit.

SRAM or Static Random Access Memory is built with at least 6 transistors and doesn't drain as long as power is applied. This is faster than DRAM, but larger and more power hungry.
