Tapir (tepid_tapir@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 16-Jul-2024 01:29:41 JST Tapir Alright let's kick this one off
The National Aviary in PA announces the birth of their FIRST critically endangered Hooded Vulture chick! These guys get poisoned a lot, either accidentally from eating vermin that was poisoned or on purpose, which has fucked their numbers along with some other issues like poaching, habitat loss, etc. The chick's first time parents, Ralf and Opal, will be staying with the chick behind the scenes and helping to rear it. It is not yet known at this time when the public will be able to view the new babe.
The Maryland Zoo in (can you guess?) Maryland proudly introduces two baby Trumpeter Swans, which I just learned are called cygnets (SIG-NIT). This will be the 8th clutch raised by parents Buttercup and Scuttle, and both parents will be raising the cygnets. The zoo will be very hands off, as these babies will actually be released into the wild once they are old enough to leave their parents

us dept of energy just fucking BANNED UVB and heat lamps!
What this means is that reptile owners are FUCKED. Heat lamps are required source of external heat for most reptiles. UVB is required to to keep reptiles healthy and bones growing correctly.
Y'all snake owners are gonna have to bring your snakes outside for like 4-5h a day... Rip if you live where winter exists. And windows block most UV that herps need so fucked on that end. -

TL;DR -
>man interrogated for 17h straight to get him to confess he killed his father
>Lied and told him the father was found dead with multiple stab wounds
>included not allowing him to have his medications or go to a hospital
>they brought HIS DOG into the room and told him the dog would have to be euthanized
>They take the man out on a car ride telling him they were going to a hospital; brought him to his home instead and pressured him to say where he killed his father
>later cops found the father was alive and visiting a friend
>never told this to the man, left him in interrogation room where he attempted suicide
>brought him to an asylum, where he still doesn't know that his dog and dad are still alive
>they dropped the dog off at a shelter instead of with family, the shelter was given 0 info but were able to track owner down thanks to the dog being chipped
Gotta back the blue :blobcatpolicedonut:

Tapir (tepid_tapir@poa.st)'s status on Friday, 17-May-2024 02:00:09 JST Tapir Some interesting news.
Wyoming Game and Fish Director, Brian Nesvik has announced they will be retiring this fall.
For anyone wondering, that is the same F&W director that only slapped a $250 fine on the man that ran a wolf down in his snowmobile, taped it's mouth shut, and tortured it for a while at a bar while taking selfies with it before finally shooting it after the wolf went comatose from it's injuries and stress. Brian Nesvik also went through great trouble to keep the animal abuser's identity a secret, and the person's identity was actually never mentioned by F&W, and was only found by internet autists.
Wyoming actually has a statue to protect the identity of people who kill wolves in Wyoming, which I guess also includes if criminal activity was involved during the event. Which to be fair this was put in place before Nesvik's time.
Nesvik has said that harassment of wildlife doesn't apply to predatory animals, and that Cody Roberts, the man that abused the wolf for several hours, does not deserve any more punishment than the $250 fine. Wolves are legal to hunt in Wyoming all year round with no bag limit, hunting license, or restrictions on strategy ie poisoning or trapping. Entire families, including puppies, can be killed in their dens with explosives or shot from the road via the comfort of your F150. Despite this, they are bitching about there being too many elk since they got rid of the wolf protections
I'm all for hunting, but if we kill everything like fucking retards we are only hurting our own species. You are not supposed to be killing more predator species than prey species. That's how shit like this happens. Hunting of predators needs to be rare. Wyoming has an estimated 160 wolves today, a far cry from the nearly 400 wolves they had in 2012. -

Tapir (tepid_tapir@poa.st)'s status on Friday, 10-May-2024 00:17:43 JST Tapir Wolf protections are once again under threat in the US.
US House of Representatives passed a bill Tuesday that would remove endangered species protections on Grey Wolves across much of the US. It still has to get passed by senate, and then may be vetoed by sleepy joe. However, there is always a chance that this bill gets slipped into a fuck huge bill, which is usually what's done nowadays.
Grey wolves were originally placed under protection status in 1970's. In 2020, their protection status was removed for a few years as the species' status worldwide dropped to least concern.
The protections were reinstated by a federal judge in 2022, after research from Fish & Wildlife showed that though the worldwide population was least concern, the population in the US is actually endangered.
However, that short 2 year stint did a number on wolf hunting; one 72 hour hunting stint in particular which killed more than 200 wolves in Wisconsin. In 15 months, Yellowstone lost 24 wolves to hunting (at the border of the park), the largest loss they had experienced since protections were in place. 215 wolves were killed in that same time span in Montana, although 450 wolves was the quota. Montana estimated a little over 1k wolves in their state, which means they purposely were looking to cull nearly 1/2 of their population.
Today, there is an estimated 5k wolves in over a dozen states in the continental US. Before protections, there were an estimated 300 left in the remote corner of one state.

With other polygamic creatures, the strongest or the smartest or the one with the largest territory, whoever can provide best is getting the larger harem.
The bottom males will simply not pass on genes or pass on very few genes. Bottom females don't often exist. In cases where is does, then this role is reversed, like in hyenas or meerkats.
It's actually a very interesting (but not the only) way to weed out undesirables. -
Tapir (tepid_tapir@poa.st)'s status on Thursday, 18-Apr-2024 21:37:45 JST Tapir @Shadowman311 @CatLord NGL I feel the same way. The most minute issues can have very detailed explanations.
However, for animal advice take it with a giant grain of salt. From what I saw the dogs and puppies subreddit you may as well be asking facebook boomers. The dog training subs are low key retarded and worship authority. Every animal sub I have come across has been rather disingenuous and has an air of appeal to authority.
That's another issue is the upvote thing. It's a good idea on paper. But what happens instead is the first comments get the most even if it's incorrect, or the place is getting brigaded by like dogfree or something and the person telling someone to behaviorally euth their puppy gets pushed to the top. People downvote for the wrong reasons. It just adds to the echo chamber really. -
Tapir (tepid_tapir@poa.st)'s status on Thursday, 18-Apr-2024 21:37:43 JST Tapir @CatLord @Shadowman311 I feel like reddit is a very dangerous place. It really, REALLY, accentuates hivemind mentality with it's 'subreddits'.
I was once linked to a sub reddit on banning pit bulls, and found there's like a few dozen subreddits about banning pit bulls or killing dogs etc that are all hyper fixated on a certain portion of the subject. This sub is about hating pit bulls, this sub is about why you hate pit bulls, this sub is about hating pit bull owners, this sub is about making memes about people who don't like killing pit bulls but also don't own pit bulls.
That would be good for like, a blog. Not a community. The echo chambers are deafening as a result and creates a huge us vs them mentality. People get this false sense of reality.
And I thought fedi was bad with that lol I think reddit takes the cake. Even tumblr at least they have tags to force interactions outside the hivemind. -
Tapir (tepid_tapir@poa.st)'s status on Monday, 08-Apr-2024 12:23:13 JST Tapir Earlier this month, Oakland Zoo in California assisted in rescuing an 8-month-old female tiger with severe bone fractures due to calcium deficiency. They found 10 pathological fractures in a CT scan, and also noted 50 percent muscle atrophy.
The fractures appeared to be at various stages of improper healing, resulting in abnormal angles in her limbs. Said abnormal angles means the animal was unable to move properly, creating muscle atrophy associated to those limbs.
The tiger's recovery will involve building calcium, physical therapy, and after months of recovery of the limbs, possibly surgery. The zoo is cautiously optimistic for a full recovery though, but arthritis may develop in later years.
The tiger cannot perform natural behaviors due to medical issues and is currently receiving specialized enrichment for mental health and to help build muscle. No history on her case because it is an ongoing legal battle. -
Tapir (tepid_tapir@poa.st)'s status on Friday, 05-Apr-2024 22:14:06 JST Tapir I think I have sporadically posted about the Lykoi, I was sorta excited about it because I thought it was cute, original, and a breed of cat I could see myself actually *gasp* purchasing!
Welp nix all of that cuz look at this tea 🍵 I have here on them;
Lykois tend to develop a skin issue when they hit 3-5y old. Being that this breed happened about from a feral cat mutation, it is likely when they started breeding this mutation breeders had no clue before pumping out lots of kittens. But it's been like 15 years or so, so now they're just covering it up.
Would also explain why cat fancier associations (this is like the cat version of kennel clubs) has just dropped probationary period of recognizing this breed and are wiping their hands with it.
Long story short, the skin issue is they develop large and numerous sebaceous cysts - in laymen terms, they are covered in huge, deep zits. Sometimes they pop on their own, otherwise they need to manually expressed :vomit: to relieve pressure. Some owners report cats biting/scratching them open.
I am sparing y'all the disgusting photos of them being popped open. -

Don't have an argument/debate with more than one person. No debate ever stayed on topic and civil when other people start jumping in.
Instead, if you really want to continue the discussion, ask the users to slip into your DMs. Watch as no one participates after such a request, because all of the fun was riling up their followers to call you names and gain internet clout for dropping memes on you.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk -

Tapir (tepid_tapir@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 09-Mar-2024 11:27:02 JST Tapir @sjw Stop this is making me really really really want sheep.
There have been a lot of studies on music and the effect it has on animals. I do genuinely believe it can have a positive effect. I feel like those guys are vibing.
At the shelter I would FORCE all the animals to listen to Erik Satie for about an hour before we open. And they seemed a lot quieter. Sick rooms also had nap times at noon where I'd turn the lights off for an hour with quiet acoustics. I think it really helps.
I'll have to remember to play music for my sheep when I get them. -
