@itsfoss They're just going to keep getting worse and worse until people either get off their duffs and start demanding privacy laws be made that actually mean something or *after* people start getting massive amounts of damages and then start suing (and winning -- tricky against big company lawyers, but not impossible when they go this far.)
@nixCraft Somewhere along the way this world became one where con artists and just plain jerks are celebrated rather than abhorred and it just feels like a bad Twilight Zone episode, right down to the bad acting...
@itsfoss You should toss a #retrocomputing tag on this since it's going to hit a lot of people in the nostalgia.
@arstechnica Let's be clear: a lot of media are specifically doing this on purpose.
Also importantly, it also goes the other way. They use such language to make early/loose interpretations seem like fact.
@nixCraft I have never had to test it, but the "Find my Device" function is supposed to be able to remote wipe. Also, modern versions of the OS have user partitions encrypted and inaccessible until unlocked (so best to set a good password, not just a PIN.)
@nixCraft I think it was trying to say 65535 but messed even that up.
@nixCraft I wish I could answer that with something like "a 486/100 with a Vibra16+SC55 or maybe a DB50XG and high quality CRT monitor." Sadly, that's my DOSBox setup. Excluding my 2013 model car I think I have to answer a 2-in-1 from 2016. Haven't had the money to replace it, but also, for some reason they stopped making 2-in-1s like this. Closest thing are "transformer" laptops. I don't really understand why.
@arstechnica Wrong answer. The correct answer is: Microsoft is proprietary, privately owned, and completely out of their control. If Microsoft had the best cybersecurity around, the government should still use something more controlled.
@nixCraft localhost:5001 is better.
@nixCraft Apparently they do. I don't know why, but I have seen it.
@nixCraft 1MiB. My first was a 16MHz 286.
Fun fact: you can run Windows 3.1 on a 286. You have to start it in "standard mode" and then walk away and find something else to do for something like ten minutes.
@nixCraft The truly sickening thing is these companies have the resources. They could hire people and build models legally with non-stolen content. They would have, of course, the obvious moral benefits, but naturally they don't care about morals. What they do care about is legally created models have no chance of becoming lawsuits later and, what's more, they can be created with model tuning in mind, so be more efficient and effective with more accuracy.
@arstechnica Of all things to screw with, botulism toxin is... not exactly high on the list of things that make sense.
@arstechnica I imagine those around Trump are all experts in coups alright.
@arstechnica I'm still convinced that, with the help of COVID-19 raging completely uncontrolled and antivaxxers, even stuff like Polio that has been considered to be mostly eliminated is all going to make a comeback.
It's about to be a really fun time to be a child in 'Murika.
@arstechnica Would be sort of neat to see an offline version of this sort of thing. I can't imagine getting great overall results from it, but I could imagine it might at least handle simpler things like lofi or etc just to generate good background stuff or something.
@nixCraft This certainly sums up a lot. Drives me crazy watching these people who are very obvious -- not even subtle -- con artists get away with all sorts of crazy stuff. As far as I can tell it's just through sheer force -- like a hurricane. They just keep forcing forcing forcing and everyone lies down to let them walk over them.
I suspect with proper analysis we all could do it, but we would have to suspend all morals and become sociopaths by choice.
@nixCraft To be fair, that's less "bash" and more just "*nix consoles." Rather than really being about which shell you actually use, most of that is the availability and power of CLI programs to actually do things.
Though Bash scripting can do quite a lot of powerful things too of course.
Mostly I'd just say it's far more pleasant to use with more control, things like colorization for easier visualization of things, better tab completion, etc etc.
@arstechnica I still don't understand why they don't just run a SoC to control the chip like AMD does. Intel has the knowhow and even already basically has the means in-house. This also would have had the advantage of being able to make Raptor Lake on up universally compatible (since the SoC could control whether the economy cores get used instead of relying on software control.)
I feel like a lot of issues like this could be solved that way potentially.
I keep hoping to use the social networks for something else. I'd really love to talk about games, music, etc etc. But somehow it always turns political. Don't follow me if you don't want to see potentially either or completely at random.
