The “pay us to prevent us from taking away value from the service” model is inherently wrong.

The real solution is to get decent hardware that’s stable and works well without having to agree to a single proprietary software license.
Not trying to bash normies here even - people feel overwhelmed at the prospect of such a task. This is why it is so common to hear the suggestion hand-waived away in posts “gah, nobody has time for that!”. Like with anything worth doing, it just takes some relearning and some broadening of one’s perspective.
I am reminded of Charliebrownau, who often posted about the mistrust of Intel management engine. But when confronted with the fact that AMD does something similar which is even less studied and understood than ME: dead silence from him… because he had already invested himself in compromised AMD hardware.
@awooo @SuperDicq @chjara @charlotte Nirvana fallacy. Just because perfection is out of reach, doesn’t mean that one should just give up. And the fact that some blobware is currently unavoidable does not excuse its presence.
@SuperDicq @slash I’m betting that goolag end up making googlevideo.com their chokepoint.

Political solutions, as observed on the web:
“Guys, I know how we can stop tracking cookies! Let’s make a law that compels sites to inform visitors when tracking cookies are requested and then they can make a totally informed decision, guys!” :soy:
>Popup banners everywhere for normies. Everyone just clicks “accept” anyways.
Meanwhile, the real solution is non-political: just block that shit yourself.
@mer @flisk 350 is like a typical electricity bill where I came from. I know a couple people first hand that would probably literally fight to the death to have a rent anywhere below four figures.

@james @SuperDicq @adiz It must be exhausting to have to constantly adjust one’s horse blinders. And if anything gets past a blocklist it will frighten the mare.
The feed at GamingOnLinux Articles RSS for: Open Source really ought to be called “Articles RSS for: Proton, WINE and other ways to cuck out for windows“
I am pleased to finally replace it with LibreGameWiki’s RSS as it is much more relevant to those of us who reject proprietary trashware.
@xianc78 Having only watched the video, note that it is only emitting from the very tail of the aircraft. In that section of the airframe sits the auxiliary power unit (APU), a small jet engine not used for propulsion. Which is often run while aircraft sit on the tarmac to generate power.
My first inclination is that the APU is suffering some kind of failure.
The new Mullvad Browser update restricts the ability to remove or disable uBlock Origin. It’s one thing to endorse a tool, but it’s another to try to force users to use it.
For those using the browser, it can still be removed by navigating to ~/mullvad-browser/Data/<profile-code>.default-release/extensions/ and manually deleting the uBlock Origin .xpi file.

She knows that section 13 of the Facebook community standards prohibits videos that depict the murder of one or more people. When Chloe explains this to the class, she hears her voice shaking.
Shit, I’ve seen probably hundreds of death videos of all kinds of circumstances and not once did I ever feel “traumatized”. I would maybe even consider an easy paycheck if all they ask is a strong stomach, but then again I have a conscience so I could never possibly bring myself to work for a real world Ministry of Truth.
@mer >Watching television
The character is not talking about her age. She is talking about her IQ.
@nqd It’s just brain damage design. I also detest ISPs that restrict the management of their modems to some web application on their site.
“My kid is a computer wizard” - never seen the inside of a PC and can’t type with a physical keyboard and has never logged into a router.
You know how they do it now? I didn’t even realize this until I had the misfortune of watching a zoomie “setup” a “router”. The “router” instruction manual instructs them to install an app on their phone through which the “router” is managed. No option to login to a web interface or SSH is ever provided.
Or setting up wifi…
Also a black box to zoombies. To many of them, wifi is internet, rather than just a connectivity medium.
I feel like gen z doesn’t even know how to run emulators or torrent roms.
It’s worse than that, my friend. They can’t even conceptualize what an emulator is. They cannot differentiate between an emulator program and a game rom. To them, the emulator is itself the game to be run.
@fsf There’s a word for this in common parlance. Grooming https://wrongthink.link/posts/tech-industry-grooming-children/
@SuperDicq This is not territory for a governmental legal system to tackle. Rather, the real solution is in technical measures. Purchase devices from manufacturers who do not embed such malfeatures. And if no owner-respecting devices is currently being made, then simply do not allow that thing into your life.
Of course, most people aren’t going to take any digital self responsibility. So they are going to continue to live in a digital hellscape, and forcing the rest of us to “inhale second-hand smoke”.
