I’ve seen this play out before. They rally around it as the one true fix, until the pressure becomes too great for the abused to resist any longer. The debloating tool (lipstick on a pig) falls out of maintenance and the mass of users decrying how terrible $FORCED_NEW_THING is passively accept it because “well, you need it if you want to do vendor-locked thing©!“. The root of the problem is that they aren’t pursuing freedom, but rather trying to cling to familiar vices at all costs. Just enjoy the spectacle.

Never heard of it before. But a cursory search suggests it is reinventing the wheel with “AT protocol” (was ActivityPub missing something they critically needed that couldn’t be added into the standard?), seeking to monetize ( 🚩 ), is being developed in secrecy away from scrutiny, and has development which received funding from twitter.

@mjdxp @grillchen @kaia We need a good descriptive term for that archetype. “PC gamer” is too broad, and also includes some people who are actually technically literate. Like how we have the convenient and well recognized term “woke” to describe those who subscribe to a cluster of intersecting political ideologies.

• When you tell about new service a very large group of people immediately tries to find it in their smartphone app store. It has to be obvious and they expect this app to be their main or only interface. Not having “the app” is showstopper.

I have no desire to interact with people like that.
