Rally cars have a massive diffuser, but it's also a ground effect. Those foils don't strike me as effective. I'd wager an experienced pilot sees little to no gain, while someone that makes constant course corrections might see an improvement.
They *had to* add to this glider, because overcorrection was a thing.

@WashedOutGundamPilot If "date" wasn't wrapped in quotation marks, I'd say the parents cared. It's the equivalent of pushing him into a brothel for his first, only worse. Setting him up with someone who will bed him for a set of wheels ends as soon as the title is in her name.
So going into college, the kid will be heartbroken. Perhaps even resentful. Throwing a used car at a complete stranger to 'fix their kid before he leaves home' is kinda like a Hail Mary. Let's-cut-a-check, after being MIA during his development.

@troubledturtle @WashedOutGundamPilot I can't even count how many times I've seen over the top wheels distract from the car. Even just the rim to tire ratio can have a negative aesthetic - a 13" rim with a tall tire or big rim with a non-existent sidewall. And the wrong offsets. Ugh.

The fact that he didn't specify which engine it had confirms he was a poser. Shackles and mags were cheap, and the car would've been slower after that. Slower you say? Yep, they didn't go around corners so good, LOL.
And listening to Boston? Their album debuted in 1976. The big engine for the Nova put out ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE horsepower back then. From everything I've read (unless you were buying old musclecars) being a car guy during the smog-era absolutely sucked.
