I remember quitting :birdsite: right after #29C3, the 2012 Congress.

Between then and now, every Congress, every hacker camp, incessantly promoted Twitter. Invited people to tweet under the relevant hashtag, displayed tweets on at-venue screens all over the place, etc.

This year it's all fedi. Toots in #37C3 displayed along the @name@example.org address; @Tusky (and possibly other fedi apps) getting their own info cards on these as well.

I waited for this for a decade.

#Wybory

First exit poll results of Polish elections are available, and based on these it looks like PiS might not remain in power, which would be good news. Let's wait for official results though!

About 73% of eligible voters voted. That is *massive* and phenomenal. Probably best result in any elections in #Poland since 1989. 🎉

But two things I am mainly interested in are:

- the result of Konfederacja, the far-right libertarians

- how many people voted in the referendum part of this election cycle

Konfederacja is a far-right libertarian unholy alliance of bigots, anti-EU conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers and so on. Exit polls give them 6.2%, but exit polls tend to under-report support for the far-right, in my experience.

The reason this is important is that if they got the ~10-13% they polled at a couple of weeks ago, they would probably form the government with PiS. Which would mean an even more far-right anti-EU government than we've ever seen in Poland so far. And that's… :oof:

Defaults matter.

@david_megginson how can people want that if they don't even know that's an option? Not many people know what an RSS/Atom feed even is.

Having them signaled directly in the browser would make people learn about RSS/Atom in general. Which in turn would perhaps lead people to question the apparent orthodoxy of following publications only on social media.

Which in turn could lead to a more healthy Web. Which is something Mozilla at least pretends to care about.

It is also important to underline the role media had in this. For over a decade, media has been outright pushing people onto Fb — "follow us on…", "more in our post on…", "you can reach us on…" — willingly, gladly even giving away direct access to their audience to a Silicon Valley corporation.

And now the same media demand payment for *posting links* on Fb, and are making a surprised picachu face that Fb is abusing its power to use underhanded tactics against that.

Total FUBAR!

@tod I wonder when the media wakes up and starts promoting their own RSS channels, newsletters, and the like, and start rebuilding that direct relationship with their audiences.
