@arstechnica sure, go ahead, allow data caps. But make advertisers pay users for all of the bandwidth consumed in delivering their ads. If you're gonna turn my network access into a scarce commodity you better pay me every time you use my quota.

But I have to say, recent model rental cars I've driven have had some atrociously awkward designs, even when working correctly.

Howard Chu @ Symas (hyc@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 19-Jul-2024 10:24:01 JST Howard Chu @ Symas @nixCraft kinda. I'm always looking for existing code to do what I want, because usually it's only a tiny piece of what I want to do overall, and I want to get to the full solution ASAP. But I'll also read the source and profile it, and rewrite it if it's obviously sub-opimal in places.

I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to get panfork to behave. Mainly, I wanted accelerated H.264/H.265 decoding to work. Looks like Rockchip expects someone to wrap their mpp libraries in a VAAPI backend but they won't do it themselves, and they deleted their repo of their older vaapi driver from github. Damned annoying.

Howard Chu @ Symas (hyc@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 21-Sep-2023 05:59:00 JST Howard Chu @ Symas @arstechnica typical nearsighted American thinking: restricting access to IP only erodes the value of that IP because it forces people to workaound its absence. And it's arrogant ignorance to think workarounds can't succeed.
IP is intrinsically worthless. The only thing truly valuable is the Intellect that creates it. IP, and ideas in general, can only have value when they're shared. If you keep ideas to yourself they can never influence the world. They go nowhere, as if they never existed.

Thing is, even when it works well, java still sucks for deterministic execution. Targeting java just isn't a smart solution.
