@GabeLakmann I’ve always said the entire gun industry is driven primarily by guys w/20-500 guns, and all you have to do to guarantee sales is introduce some made up niche or mission that they haven’t “filled” yet.
I think glock started selling some gay thing that’s a 17 frame, with the slide of a 19 on it. Easy for them and guys can tell their wives “babe I GOTTA buy it because unlike the G17 and G19s I own right now this combines the best of both worlds!”

@Rayfield I’m using it as a ref for all the other ones, every fren IRL seems sold on these silly extremes as if it’s easier to have a 3”bbl/8”grip or 8”bblx3”grip footprint to hide. It’s just fun to change it up, I don’t like people telling me the same BS they sell their wives on when they try to justify their purchase.
“no dude it’s way easier to conceal my G19X than a G19, the dimensions are way better”. Nah man, just gimme the truth: It looks cool and it’s really fun to buy and modify new guns. The bonus w/ subcompacts/compacts is that you can actually use them every day

@GabeLakmann Guys have anywhere from 20 to literally 500 guns. It’s more common than you think. Most of the gunboomers I know have at least 2/3 safes chock full, if you say each is anywhere from 12-36 rifles then it adds up quick.. Hell, one guy is younger than me, I think his last count was something like, 11 diff. AR builds just in 556, with another dozen across some boutique calibers. Add in the gamut of old surplus rifles and he’s probably somewhere north of 300 guns transferred to him, judging solely from the fact he never ever sells anything and he seems to have every fun new gun on the market within a week of introduction.

They have their failings just like us, but damn they really go all-in on making sure the grandchildren will be armed. They won’t have a wife, or a fruitful career, but they’ll be armed.

That case finish is very thin and only surface level, it ends up wearing right off w/ handling pretty quick. The majority of ‘case hardened’ stuff today is a surface finish, few have the money for true bone charcoal finishing because it takes forever.
Add in the old school internals (gay flat springs mostly) and you end up having to replace stuff pretty quick if you use it a lot. They’re great for the price, you can enjoy them, they’re just a bit entry-level, like a beginner guitar that gives you a taste but won’t be your go-to for 30 years of use

When you put some money into it then it works fine, it just doesn’t look as cool when all the contact surfaces are worn into plain steel.
IDK if there are quality ones. Might as well buy an uberti, then if you outgrow it you know the money was well spent for a beater.
Plus you can always buy a cart conversion

@GabeLakmann @BroDrillard @Jonaschuzzlewit @brimshae @leespringfield1903 The guy who made the A2/A4 mods actually had a post about it, one of the things they complained about was that the barrel got bent from bayonet practice, so they beefed it up ahead of the gas block…but he later found that it was probably just stuff from the gas tube after all, and the weight was a waste.
Lots of the design choices in the AR came from trying to grunt-proof it.

The A4 is cool and all but it’s a dog, a 2001 gun in pretty much every way. No free float but it’s like, 12 lbs, and it only fits about 35% of the population judging from the way everyone’s always mounting their acogs.
The C7’s have a gimmicky attachment but it’s light and the overall rifle is a real charmer to shoot. I’ll slap together a clone someday just to have an elcan sight (gay and british but clone correct)

@GabeLakmann @BroDrillard @Jonaschuzzlewit @brimshae @leespringfield1903 Drawbacks are worth the capability though. Can ID targets at range and still pop coyotes and bunnies up close. If you have oblique sightlines it’s nice being able to go full/1/2/4/8/10x as an unknown hilux approaches
I’ve been surprised nobody’s making neoprene bumper shells for these optics though, seems obvious to me.

Most guys barely have them focused to begin with. Around here it’s just too sandy to have the external RDS stuff, it bugs me seeing dirty glass and none of those little caps ever seal them enough. I’m still holding out for new ones

Out in the field it’s all hype, most people aren’t discriminating enough to tell the difference in IRL use.
About the only real, dealbreaking diff. $$$ gets you is improved fog protection, which you definitely CAN tell when you’re huffing in the dead of winter

Nobody’s mounting an M203 in enough numbers to make THAT the standard, and it’s extra cost and variation that creates uneven cooling over time. Something fluted would be my pick, but then it’s still too dang expensive for most. Have had good luck w/ them across every brand I’ve tried, though that’s likely down to the fact they get extra TLC in manufacture as a premium product.
Best to just have a normal, straight, sweetspot barrel to issue across the board and let the one out of 200 guys procure the special one w/ cuts when they have to have that launcher attached.
Colt barrels have been very solid, but IDK how they are post buyout today. If they were bought by CZ they might even be better

@GabeLakmann @BroDrillard @Jonaschuzzlewit @brimshae @leespringfield1903 I think every barrel in the NSN registry is basically hampered by some procurement thing. People got stuck w/ socom profile because it was the only one the gov could buy in that length, and it ended up the de facto standard.
IIRC there’s something similar w/ the 22” SPR the navy bought, they couldn’t get 20” precision barrels because they kept being told there was already a 20” bbl in the system for the M16. So they extended it a bit.

If it weren’t for the sunset we’d STILL have an AWB and all our gun industry fun would have been cali-legal all this time. From their POV it looked like cucking might keep them alive, that self-regulation would prevent legislation.
Thanks to braver companies pushing the envelope we know it was a retarded tactic in hindsight, but I don’t buy the idea it was a bunch of democrat union guys trying to kill their own product. They were just as scared of the ATF then as normies are now, and there weren’t 10,000 other AR companies taking the heat off their backs.
Also their ineptitude leaked the M16 TDP, so that’s cool

Today it seems obvious that AR stuff is interchangeable, but the AR platform was seen as integral for the first few decades it was out. Telling them you wanted additional uppers would probably get you a puzzled glance, just like saying you wanted 3 diff. slides for varied barrel lengths on your 1911. The olds would wonder why you’d rather have half a gun instead of 2 whole guns, particularly when they only really had 2 flavors of rifle.
I love the AR platform, but the modularity we see in it today is more a factor of insane, prodigious production levels and an enthusiastic customer base than the inherent design. Until the late 70’s or so Colt didn’t really touch on just how great the system could be once matured. Once they got cheap enough for the aftermarket to start cutting them up and refining systems, it all took off.

We really lucked out with how things worked for us. If we still had the AWB, or they supercharged it, we’d never have been able to capitalize on the gamer boom for cool weaponry.
I just give up on a lot of the boycotts, I got tired of being the only one to remember. Like how benchmade happily cut up guns for the LEOs and donates to the dems, or team wendy hosting a hillary clinton fundraiser in 2015
