tyil (tyil@fedi.tyil.nl)'s status on Wednesday, 31-May-2023 21:33:10 JST tyil @verita84@poster.place @charliebrownau@poa.st This would be true if hosting it was easy and/or cheap. Matrix in its current form is rather slow and uses a lot of resources compared to alternatives, such as IRC or XMPP. Adding to that the apparent focus on adding even more garbage, rather than getting a single decent feature-complete homeserver implementation going, I would say that Matrix is pretty much garbage, and won't be much more than that as time goes on.
It is free as in freedom and it can federate in theory, so I have no moral issues with it. It's just very low quality when we've had better solutions to every problem it pretends to solve for over a decade. -
tyil (tyil@fedi.tyil.nl)'s status on Wednesday, 31-May-2023 21:32:03 JST tyil I will never understand how users on an instance with "foss" in the name can be so blatantly in love with non-free software, and even promote those over free alternatives.

The "discoverability" of a Discord community is only perceived to be better because _you're already on it_ and you keep promoting it, while not even hinting at the options of using more user friendly platforms. This is an issue that is created, and made worse by your own actions.the fact that many people wanting help won't know or care what matrix or irc is?They don't need to know what protocol is used under the hood. Just put a link somewhere, it opens a tab, they can chat. The vast majority of open online chat rooms back in the day was IRC, very few people knew it was IRC they were using. It doesn't matter. Stop trying to make up non-issues as excuses to promote proprietary software.doesn't seem like someone wanting to promote proprietary software would do thatYet here you are, in this very thread, not even suggesting open options until you're explicitly told that an open option is preferred. -

But besides that, there certainly are slick and shiny IRC interfaces out there.
You don't need to make a permanent account to get some support, that's what makes IRC an infinitely better protocol than whatever proprietary shitware is being shoveled today.
And better than Matrix too, for that matter, though I've been told it is technically possible to configure your server to allow anonymous users without an account. I've never seen anyone actually do it, and I'm guessing it would just be more of a spam generator than matrix.org is already.
And honestly, if you can't figure out how to do /msg nickserv help and read, perhaps it's best you do not get to have a registered account. The barrier is minimal, but it exists, and having barriers isn't always the pure evil you want it to be. -

That's a severe step down, and that does mean there's no good one for me. Your obnoxious know-it-all attitude just makes me less likely to even consider it.
And any supposed open source community that settles on Discord as their main communication platform is something that cannot be trusted. I truly wonder how such blatant anti-open hostility can be thrown around with so little care. Every interaction we have to wonder if fosstodon users actually care about freedom and openness, or just care about looking hip on their resume. -

tyil (tyil@fedi.tyil.nl)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 19:54:20 JST tyil @jacekpoz@fosstodon.org @hfaust@shitposter.club I have checked out #Hyprland. It's got a lot of animations that I don't want, if I want to look at pretty graphics I'll put on a video. It also didn't do well with a 3 or 4 monitor setup, and can't be configured to handle tags as a single monitor-independent tagset (similar to #XMonad or #HerbstluftWM).

tyil (tyil@fedi.tyil.nl)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 19:54:19 JST tyil @fbievan@social.fbievan.live @hfaust@shitposter.club @jacekpoz@fosstodon.org I'm fairly certain #DWM worked differently than #XMonad or #Herbstluftwm last I tried, even with various patches that people suggested would make it work the way I want. I want a single tagset, with 1 tag (or workspace) visible on a monitor at all times. Each tag can be set to any given monitor. If I go to a tag that's currently displayed on a different monitor, the tags on these monitors should switch.

My point still stands, there are no good window managers for #Wayland as of right now. No matter how much you pretend and make excuses.
Feel free to let me know once a good, stable WM makes it to Wayland. -
tyil (tyil@fedi.tyil.nl)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 19:54:06 JST tyil @jacekpoz@fosstodon.org @hfaust@shitposter.club @fbievan@social.fbievan.live It's a chat protocol, it works more than fine for what it is. Marketing bullcrap doesn't make a platform better or worse, it just makes it more costly (which, in turn, often makes it worse because they want to make their marketing money back at all costs).
User friendliness? I put a link somewhere for my project, which opens a tab where the user can immediately just start talking. No popups, no additional account to register, no email confirmation. You can hardly get more friendly and inviting than that.
What you're meaning to say is "the UI of the average IRC client isn't very slick and shiny". It doesn't need to be. It's a means of open communication, and it excels at that. Much more than Matrix or Discord ever will. -
tyil (tyil@fedi.tyil.nl)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 19:54:06 JST tyil @hfaust@shitposter.club So long as there's no good window managers, I will stick to #X11. Maybe one day, but so far every time I try it's just sad how little is offered by #Wayland.
Oh, and of course not being able to just do regular shit like copy to select, or make a screenshot. It doesn't help adoption I'm sure. -
tyil (tyil@fedi.tyil.nl)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 19:54:03 JST tyil @jacekpoz@fosstodon.org @hfaust@shitposter.club If you don't have any requirements for a good tiling window manager sure. #Gnome and #KDE both don't come with one that actually tiles well. The closest ones are #Vivarium and #Velox, neither of which are stable at this point in time. I'll repeat, there's no good window manager for #Wayland as of right now.
If you don't know what I'm talking about with regards to screenshots (or really any other "basic" feature that we've had by default in X11), I don't know what to tell you. I'm glad Wayland brings no issues to you, but there's a reason a very large portion of GNU+LInux users stick to X11 while they can. -

Did you know that before Discord existed nobody was asking for help there?
You're part of this problem, you directed me to a shitty proprietary hellhole without any alternatives, until I told you I'm not willing to use it at all. -
