Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. (doctorsex@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Thursday, 11-Apr-2024 03:10:12 JST Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. I got sick this past weekend. I'm an enthusiastic participant in my congregation's low church "gospel rock" band who wouldn't miss it if I didn't have to. But you better believe every other week I'm up there an hour before service, doing rehersal because this is how I serve my congregation -

Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. (doctorsex@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Wednesday, 03-Apr-2024 05:20:04 JST Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. I would say that in the instances where a game is art, what makes it so is that it functions the same way art does- it has the same effect art has. This is by no means an airtight, rigorous, or complete definition. But it's a working one.
>every artist has an intended way of experiencing their art piece and that is an inherent part of its presentation
Do you not think game developers have a similar outlook? Generally, game mechanics are designed with a specific use and implementation in mind.
>You can find cinephiles arguing that watching movies at home televisions is the wrong way of experiencing them (and also that it's ruining the art form) because the presentation is not consistent.
Ditto; some people take this as far as debating the correct framerate for games, the best kind of screens, in the case of games with multipile releases whichever one is best, etc.
>Game play goes entirely against that sort of presentation
How? Because it's easier to do? There are plenty of ways with other mediums to willingly engage the media in a manner contrary to how the creators intended.
>video games that try to give a very particular presentation of something (because they're trying to be cinematic) take control from you as a player by limiting game play or interactivity.
Does this detract from the overall experience though, as a rule? Linearity is a criticism that is levied against some games, but if you look at any number of lists for the best or most loved or whatever games, you'll find plenty of linear ones on that list with very limited choices for the player. This would be a stronger point if I agreed that control singularly defined games as an artform -

Architecture sits at an intersection between drawing and sculpture, with a markedly more utilitarian execution than either on their own. There is also a requisite level of, at the very least, artistic inclination or sensibility to do interior design for a home well. I get the point you're getting at, though similar things to what you describe have been attempted- largely as "postmodern statement pieces" more than anything else, but to say "houses/buildings aren't art because le corbusier was a faggot" is like saying paintings can't be art because picasso sucked dick for cock. -
Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. (doctorsex@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Wednesday, 03-Apr-2024 04:32:43 JST Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. Yeah, this is why I said earlier, they are entertainment media first and foremost. Also why I qualify *some* games can be art, but categorically, as a rule, games are not art.
>And the main definition of cinema as an artform is that it is a combination of all artforms (music, photography, theatre, writing, painting) that come before it
Ok, we'll go with that
>On that level, video games are not art because they add no new art form to the cinematic
Why is adding something new now a criteria though? Movies add nothing new to the forms previous. Why is that a requirement for games but not movies?
>in fact gameplay and its interactivity is outright anti-art because of how against creator intent it is
This is such a heavy assumption. I think in some cases it's probably not wrong, but to assert it as a categorical truth? -

Yes
>Following your own logic, you would have to exclude early video games like Tetris as art because they lack cinematic quality.
I mean, yeah, pretty much. I think I should have been more clear at the begining. It's a shit discussion because it's usually either "yes, games are absolutely art" versus "no, they cannot, and never will be" when I think what's more realistic is that games *can* be art but as a rule, they aren't. Movies *are* art, but you don't often see this being discussed in the context of cheesy summer blockbuster action films like, say, michael bay's transformers movies. In a similar, but almost inverted way, we wouldn't stop considering drawings or pictures art because dogshit corporate flat art exists. -
Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. (doctorsex@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Wednesday, 03-Apr-2024 03:50:06 JST Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. Live music can have a participatory aspect to it. Arguably, movies are an evolution of stage plays- which sometimes incorporated aspects of audience participation. I'll grant neither medium is defined by the ability of the audience to participate, but by no means is it categorically defined by a lack of participation.
>that exist purely for entertainment.
Couldn't you say the exact same thing about movies as well though? -
Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. (doctorsex@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Wednesday, 03-Apr-2024 03:44:37 JST Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. >Because there is no real distinction in the argument, yet its only applied to video games for very silly reasons.
I would say it's there's still a couple of differences. Video games are not just visual, but also auditory and generally contain narrative elements (I would consider writing an art- I don't think that's too far of a leap). Contrast this to, say, candyland, or guess who. You can get invested in those things, sure, but the same level of immersion generally isn't present. There isn't a visually artistic element to a game of "trouble!" That is integral to that game, nor is there a narrative element to it. There is no musical component that can highlight the (nonexistent) narrative and any emotions it might invoke, etc. -
Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. (doctorsex@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Wednesday, 03-Apr-2024 03:27:18 JST Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. I'll use the film analogy again.
Most people would say movies are an art form. When they say that, they are not saying that "The Meg (2018) starring Jason Statham" is on par with michaelangelo's David. -

Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. (doctorsex@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Wednesday, 03-Apr-2024 03:17:25 JST Dr. Sex, Ph.d, Esq. They are art insofar as they are composed entirely of artistic elements. Categorically, they are not art *prima facie*, sure. First and foremost, they exist as entertainment. And from there it's a sliding scale ranging from a utilitarian approach, where the artistic elements are given the requisite or bare minimum attention to create an engaging enough environment to most effectively facilitate that entertainment. And then on the absolute opposite end you have things where the artistic elements are given more focus, and the entertainment is derived from those with gameplay taking the passenger's seat -
