@sun Wow, that's crazy. Thank you for the correction.
It makes no sense to me at all, so I guess I was hoping it once made sense.

These deeply weird preventive pardons are an abuse of power in two ways: First, the farcical overreach of the type of pardon. Second, the nepotism of who gets it.
Like jury nullification, presidential pardons are a cool feature, an emergency power where a more immediate and personal instance of power can instantly correct a malfunction of the slower legal system or the even slower legislation behind it. Add a human element of mercy to a cold process machinery. But that's not how it has been used for over half a century. It's not an emergency power, it's routine, and the scope is no longer to just revert a court's final decision.

Discovered a new (for me) type of antisemite who claims that Jews do not have Hebrews as ancestors. -

Thank you, Central Study Support Board (CSN, Centrala Studiestödsnämnden) for these 26 years together.
I have so many memories and I have had so many opportunities that might night have happened without your aid!

The most hilarious and informative video on vocal fry / creaky voice I have ever seen! Came here from another video by the same guy, which was also very good. I plan to see more of him.
Dr Geoff Lindsey: "Vocal Fry: what it is, who does it, and why people hate it!"

I'll throw in the clickbaity "the answers may surprise you!" as Dr Lindsey presumably has too much self-respect to do it himself. 😁

When you are sharing screen on a call, please share the common denominator, your small laptop screen, not your huge 2160p 24" desktop monitor. -

@quincy Yes, @cstross , @pluralistic and Ted Chiang have all referred to corporations as a form of slow AI that executes on a substrate of humans and paperwork. As far as I remember seeing, they each credit the other two with coming up with the analogy. 😊

@foone But why even leave tumblr? Now that Twitter is collapsing, the cool stuff I see on corporate networks is increasingly coming from tumblr.
If I didn't have Fedi and was leaving Twitter, I'd be more likely to go to tumblr than to bsky, nostr or threads, just because tumblr has better and more trustworthy leadership and cooler members.

@Moon Venting to a sympathetic ear is an important part of coping with life. We're all at capacity and investing energy in one thing means deprioritizing something else.
On the internet it's hard to know if someone wants solutions or sympathy or something in between, and people make honest mistakes, but when someone posts "not looking for solutions, but am I unreasonable for thinking X should have an option to Y" and people respond "just use Z", that is nothing other than obnoxious.

The classic of course is the ubiquitous Stack Overflow Q&"A" that goes:
"I'm trying to do X, is there a way to make Y do it?"
"Why on Earth would you want to do X?"On the other hand even that one can be warranted, as people have a bad pattern of looking for solutions to their incidental problem at hand rather than stepping back and looking at reaching their actual goal.
On the other other hand, the above happens even when people show their work and explain the circumstances that make their problem essential to the goal.
