If you want me as a Linux kernel developer then dump the mailing list and use Discord. Also I would prefer to use Rust -

@LostInCalifornia @Leyonhjelm @polarisera I have made it my mission to reply to every single one of these COBOL threads, so nothing personal but
it's completely made up, I guess they're just lying because no COBOL system uses 1875 as its epoch date. It just doesn't exist, there is no reference to it on the Internet, none. (Some archaic systems use 1899.) It didn't work anyway because they found thousands of people even older than 150. -

@Leyonhjelm @LostInCalifornia @polarisera This particular thing I have actually had some success with telling people, I think it's that generally everyone believes they have good insight into politics so they'll argue with you but if I come into a thread and say "hey so this COBOL thing, I happen to know something about this, it's just not true and there's literally no evidence for their claim on the Internet" people are willing to concede it because they know they don't actually know anything about COBOL. Also the simple math just doesn't add up.
The COBOL explanation sounds great so I totally get why people want to believe it and share it with other people. But it just doesn't hold up to investigation. -

Solana people are freaking out because after the Libra rugpull, sell to buy ratio is 4:1 and in the next three months like 7 billion dollars in locked tokens are gonna unlock and just get sold off. -

greg k-h wrote a fairly glowing endorsement of Rust in the kernel, effectively "it does so much great stuff, why wouldn't we use it?" but strangely also, an admission that he's barely used it himself and the parts in the kernel he's looked at have "magic" that he doesn't understand. -

@PalePimp @lain should have just copied apple's display renderer and compositor -

@lain @hfaust for some reason I get the impression they're not the type of people to just ask somebody like in the prop replica building community -

@lain literally the very first thing I was ever told that we needed wayland for was that it was impossible to fix screen tearing in x11. yet even today years later this is not a fixed problem in wayland. this single thing soured me on wayland completely. I feel like we were sold a super expensive lie -

> That was an explicit anti-goal of Wayland, so that we don't circle right back to one giant display server trying to support every user case that everyone has to make work for their needs.
> Wayland runs on more than just desktops, it also runs on mobile devices and embedded systems where a lot of the desktop protocols don't even make sense.
aren't these two statements contradicting each other -

I just strongly get the impression that
1. something to replace x11 was needed
2. nevertheless all the warnings about what happens when you try to start a project over from scratch are 100% true -

"x11 does too much stuff that is why wayland is needed"
"you can't do this dozen conceptually simple tasks on wayland in a simple way because wayland doesn't know if it's running on a desktop, an in-car display, or vr goggles" -

@lain @cine @mangeurdenuage when you buy something it should ask you your gender instead of assuming based on heteropatriarchal oppressive normative standards -

I think a lot of the anguish against AI in art is an extension of something we've all known for a long time, which is that your customers largely can't see and don't care about the confluence of little professional steps that build to a high quality piece of art. your goal and their goal are not aligned. you want to do real art for a living and they want a quick picture that causes an immediate impression and they don't care if the hat on the cat blends into the ear when you blow up the centimeter-wide emoji to photo size.
They know "just be better than the AI it's not hard" won't work for this reason and we're just going to get a lot more slop made instead of paying artists. -

@lain I downloaded sonic cd for ios and I think I tried to play it on the plane and it wouldn't even start up without an internet connection.
