Had a friend in college, his name was Lee. He was studying pharmacy tech. One day when we were all really high, Lee told us about how his parents had him kidnapped and taken to drug rehab, to this day he doesn't even know where it was, but he was pretty sure it was Arizona or Nevada, based on blindfolded-moonlit-drive time. They put him through a month of military-tough love style "therapy', then reversed the kidnapping and giving him another blindfold-ride back to his house.
I asked him how he got busted. He already had military-grade security on his naughty stuff, preferring to hide things in his bushy, wild hair. I smoked many a hair-joint in strange places. Just when you were in the middle of nowhere on some ridiculous hiking trip and you're ready to call it quits and tell the others to leave your body behind for the vultures to eat, Lee would rock up, and make a joint magically appear out of his hair. Lee liked to light fires with a magnifying glass he wore around his neck if there was sunlight. Lee was always, always prepared, and he always sneaked SOMETHING into every venue I'd ever been to with him. So how could he get busted?
One night, he was frying real hard on acid, rocked up to his mom, and said "HI, mom, I'm frying. How are you?" and got kidnapped three days later.
The crazy thing is, his parents had his sister kidnapped too. She joined a cult, so she went to deprogramming camp after she was kidnapped off a San Francisco street, having dropped a basket of flowers she was selling when they grabbed her. Lee's parents had a bit of legal trouble over that one, and went out of the kidnapping business.
Was Lee a good friend? No he was a fucking thief. But I had some good times with him, before he flunked out, ripped everybody off, and left town. There were a few golden days before the end. And nobody deserves to be treated the way Lee was by their parents. Maybe that's part of why Lee turned out to be such an asshole. -

@Hoss that's corporate work for ya too. You're just a number to them they dgaf about you. This person should have seen it coming if there's been ongoing layoffs over the last 6 months. Tech people got too comfortable, thought their specialized knowledge was irreplaceable. In the corporate world, nobody is irreplaceable. And chatgpt git the copy writers and the code writers in one fell swoop.
Almost every writer in the world is now obsolete. Every little job that struggling authors wrote to get by, the review columns, the catalogue copy, the travelogue pieces, the real estate news-all that's going to be done by ai now.
The code writers are next. They'll keep the top 5% of coders maybe, to do debugging and check the ai's coding work, but the rest of the tech people are gonna be out of a job.
So they'll all go work fast food because that can pay like, $20 an hour in some places, right? Then the salaries will get too be too much, and they'll replace everybody with the Burger-Matic 5000 and there will be employee-free touchless McDonald's and very high unemployment. -

@Humpleupagus @PeachySummer @NotAWeeb I had a dream last night that my wife and I were young and hot again and our house was full of high definition cameras. It was like the Truman Show and we were imprisoned there. The security guards were taping us having sex, doing some editing, and selling the sex tapes on the Outside. Finally my wife and I escaped the house, escaped the city, and made it to the Outside. We came up to a convenience store and our sex tape was on sale there and there was a screen grab of my O-face on the cover. But then I fucked up and started scrutinizing the packaging too much and I overloaded the RAM in my brain so I woke up. I liked that dream. -

@Humpleupagus @NotAWeeb @PeachySummer I wish I could. I wanted to watch it really bad because in the dream we were trapped in there for years, nothing to do but fuck, eat, sleep, and work out. Nobody was allowed Outside, and if you went Outside you could never come back.
But i got too excited about the tape and I woke up. And there was more than one tape, some of the others had my wife on the cover, and some had just almost unidentifiable body parts. The series had a name that was on all the tape covers and for the life of me, I can't remember it. -
