@cmthiede @gimulnautti @zleap @davetroy It's been bouncing around in my head quite a lot. I don't know that ActivityPub will do it, but it's the closest thing we have right now maybe. I envision something more integrated with your home network though, that is founded on secure, unique identity, and is "homeless" as far as needing some particular service or everyone has to re-address you. Most of the stuff we share can be shared just between our actual devices.

@zleap @cmthiede @gimulnautti @davetroy ActivityPub is designed for http/https style traffic with service servers being maintained by someone that are out on the web with a public IP. When one goes down or you want to move you have to do a re-homing (it's baked into the protocol I think).

But, if you just wanted to share stuff with friends you could do it over I2P or Tor and that has a unique address that is a key.

One part of the idea bouncing in my head. Detach from the web.

@nixCraft Slackware used to install without a root password. You were expected to have half a brain and give it one after. Still obviously a bad practice by today's standards and yeah it changed decades ago.

After I set a root password I started doing what that guy did...just trying everyone's telnet port in the #c++ channel on IRC.

@randahl Not all operating systems are American. Linux, the kernel part, was originally developed by a Finn. He's now also American but back then he wasn't. Others in the kernel core group are European. It's a fairly worldwide effort really, but it has some significant European roots as well as American.

You also have complete control over it and can secure it independent of US influence and fiddling.

It's a great system too.

@fsfe Not all public information is available to the public. Classified information is owned by the public but not available. Would you want the software that runs your tanks and nuclear subs to be freely available?
