Btw, even the UX says you must post Unlisted to opt out of discovery features. This obviously wouldn't help you against governments, advertisers, really anybody worth hiding from. But it does opt you out of as:Public.

For the record, governments, advertisers and the like have received *zero* direct threats of violent physical harm as the result of their fediverse indexing efforts. I have received dozens. Mine can be opted out of without ever visiting the site. Theirs cannot be opted out of for any reason at any time.

It's about etiquette.

as:Public does one better: It sits on the streaming API. We literally get *pushed* hundreds of statuses a minute without appearing in a single notification or follow request. No federation means nothing to block.

The fourth component, Backfiller, will be a straight-up fan-out aggressive turboscraper, but the Collector just sits on streaming APIs and the Recorder is designed to be pushed to by relays or Collectors.

Of course, they straight up ignore their "neighbors" who unironically call for entire immutable classes of people to be murdered. I did not choose, and cannot change, that I am in all three immutable classes of people they want murdered.

So our friend here is both defending people with totalitarian fantasies, *and* people with naive "tee hee we're gonna pretend we're a town"/"mean people online is an existential threat to our perfect commune!" fantasies, while claiming I'm both of these things.

and again, I can't help but loop back to: Anything even remotely describable as a "totalitarian state" *will* have this sort of technology within 14 days of wanting it.

We can extend this to every boogeyman that's been brought up; Marketing agencies, intelligence agencies, insurance and credit reporting agencies, all of them can have a full suite of capture and analytics tools that put mine to absolute shame, and they could have it in under a month. They likely already have it. If they weren't interested before November, they sure as shit are now.

And because nobody even believes this, simply by virtue of these entities not loudly announcing their presence like I do, nobody really cares *or* thinks to adjust their behavior accordingly.

But anybody who builds a fediverse search tool brings that uncomfortable reality back to the forefront. So the messenger gets shot. Anybody who dips back to Twitter and outright cites "the text search and discovery sucks" as the reason is told "good get out lmao" by people who expected a decentralized social media network to be a sekrit klub members only.
