If you’re looking for #OpenSource app recommendations, you probably generally land in the usual « LibreOffice / GIMP » space.

But what about other apps, like Obsidian, Notion, VS Code, Teams or Slack?

@tio The system wide features should be implemented by your system. It’s not up to the app to support your window manager, it’s up to your window manager to add a title bar to apps that don’t use one.

It’s up to your global menu to detect menus from an app, there’s no API on Linux to do that, (there are hacks). It ‘s up to your theme to theme your apps, since there’s no API to theme apps on Linux, whatever the desktop you use. Pin this on the desktop or the distro, not the app.

@tio It’s always the same argument: power users feel they’re losing access to customization, the rest of the world applauds more coherency and better design.

I still stand in the corner of regular users who don’t theme and don’t use window managers, and thus will have 100% better experience than before the update.

The fact is: if you need to customize, you still can and you know how. If you don’t care, your experience is simpler. It’s a win in my book.

How did the Final Fantasy 7 remake get so much praise? Combat is such a step down from the original’s turn based, side quests are the worst I’ve seen in a game since AC Odysee, making you re tread the same 5 areas. I’m getting strong Dragon Age 2 vibes from this combat and side quests.

Nostalgia factor is great, it looks cool, but man it doesn’t play well.

With the recent moves from #Twitter, #Reddit, and even #Youtube, I think it’s becoming clear that ads are not a sustainable business model in the long run (and yes, I know I run a YouTube channel funded by ads 😅)

I took a look at a few examples, at how this decline is also making the web worse for everyone, at alternative platforms, and tried to imagine what an internet without ads to fund content creation and big platforms could look like:

@thatguyoverthere @Cinnamon @lps @Blort Also, the argument doesn’t hold, because I AM on Peertube, and the link is in all my video’s description, and I talked about it every time I mention Peertube in a video. Links to Peertube videos also get posted under my YouTube videos all the time.

The result: about 300 views on Peertube per video. I love Peertube but most people don’t care about it.

@Cinnamon @Blort @lps @thatguyoverthere There’s a big difference between asking people to donate and people actually donating. Like it or not, these ads pay my rent. Donations don’t.

@thatguyoverthere @Cinnamon @lps @Blort If I only posted on Peertube, I wouldn’t be able to do this as a day job. A video takes me between 8 and 12 hours to make, if these videos don’t pay for that time, I simply can’t make them, it’s a simple as that. Nothing to do with quality or attracting an audience, YouTube viewers wouldn’t magically move to Peertube if I stopped posting to YouTube, they’d just stop watching.

@lps @Blort I wish it could be, but until I can make a living off Peertube, it won’t happen on my end :/

@Blort @lps I don’t understand? I do have a Peertube channel, but I won’t put it first compared to my YouTube channel, that’s what I was saying :)

@Cinnamon @Blort @lps Because I don’t want people to watch there: I don’t make money from Peertube. If everyone moved to Peertube, I couldn’t make videos anymore, because I wouldn’t be able to earn a living :)

It’s there for people who really want to escape YouTube, but I am not promoting it until a view on Peertube makes me the same amount of money as a view on YouTube :)

Oh this is BAD. Without the Aurora store, or if people are too scared to use because Google would delete their accounts, the whole Android ROM ecosystem is pretty much dead.

Adding an easy way to create a Mastodon account on mastodon.social to the official app? Yes, please.

I don’t understand the drama around this. Not like it’s removing other instances, or the ability to switch instances afterwards. It just gives an easier way in for people who don’t understand the instances concept.

It’s a good thing. Anything that helps onboarding is a good thing, and no, it doesn’t mean the developer has gone evil or wants to centralize things. 🙄🙄

@deivpaukst Except it would still be decentralized. It wouldn’t make other instances invalid. And it wouldn’t be a problem to have one instance bigger than the others, as the whole network isn’t locked down.

I upgraded my main laptop to #Fedora 38. One click in the Software Center, it downloaded everything in about 5 minutes, and the upgrade itself took around the same amount of time. Everything works after rebooting, except the Quick Settings Tweaker and Dark mode switcher extensions, which are not crucial, so I’d say it was pretty damn smooth! I’m always amazed at how simple our desktops have become these days…

Will upgrade the desktop today as well!

@chertograd It’s an Ubuntu thing, Fedora uses the GNOME Software Center, and it works perfectly :)
