A lot of people would leave YouTube if they could find the content they enjoy elsewhere. Everyone I've tried to push toward peertube outside of fedi is concerned less with "how can I discover new content without Google's algorithm" and more about "does so and so post on there?" The content consumers are just waiting for creators to jump ship. -

> youtube viewers wouldn't magically move to peertube
This is a strange take, especially coming from a Linux inspired channel. The people who watch your content are at least moderately interested in alternative technology (otherwise they'd all just keep the windows/mac os that came with their computer). I used to be a YouTube Red custtomer. I stopped using YouTube. Many others have too. I do think I probably miss some of the channels I used to watch. I thought it was really cool that you actually created a peer tube account because that's more than what most people are willing to do (so I do give you some credit btw).
> This couldn't be my only job
Maybe. I think it's hard to say until you tried. It's like moving a store from a mall with high foot traffic to some building on the side of the road. You might have subscribers who won't click away from YouTube. You probably have plenty who aren't afraid of the big bad internet and will go to another site if they enjoy your content, and some of them probably would even prefer they didn't feel bound to youtube (the same feeling you have in a way) because "all of the creators I watch are here". It is possible moving to a "value 4 value" model could result in less income. It also could mean your content reaches new people who appreciate the fact that you are not coercing them to view ads to watch your content and will give value back directly.
> Nothing to do with quality or attracting an audience
Do you feel the videos you make are valuable enough to generate income on their own or is the value you provide really to corporations who use your videos as a vessel to attach their own messaging? Is that the kind of value you really want to provide to the world? If so you could probably find a more clickbait worthy topic to focus on and make more 💰 (linux is a bit niche [ignoring the professional side]). If not, a value 4 value model might be more aligned with your true goals. -

A video takes me between 8 and 12 hours to make, if these videos don’t pay for that time, I simply can’t make them, it’s a simple as that. Nothing to do with quality or attracting an audience, YouTube viewers wouldn’t magically move to Peertube if I stopped posting to YouTube, they’d just stop watching.

Like it or not, these ads pay my rent. Donations don’t.

Links to Peertube videos also get posted under my YouTube videos all the time.
The result: about 300 views on Peertube per video. I love Peertube but most people don’t care about it.
