@Corfiot @kissane @pieist I am aware of all these considerations. I don't think it's authoritarian to want to keep Holocaust-denying Nazis --literal Neonazis endorsing violence against Jews and blacks --from using this system. I agree there's not a real clear way to do it yet. But we do have report "buttons" here, there is the option of a "blanket ban" apparently--how does that work?--and more people can become interested in cooperating on banning these people.

@duke @kissane I do understand the concept of this tool, Mastodon. I just think it can be altered somewhat and for good reason. To help prevent the kind of misinformation that leads to murder. Literal murder. Often mass murder.

@errante @kissane @pieist That seems to be not true. There is such a thing as a blanket ban. And why is there a report button if no one can stop people from appearing on mastodon servers? Also Mastodon can do updates to make it easier to block domains and people who are White Supremacists literally denying the Holocaust and posting about how Hitler is a great man and endorsing mass murder. Which is what I'm seeing this morning as I'm attacked by these people.

@pieist @kissane There needs to be a sort of kill switch in the software. If some instance is running Nazi propaganda and endorsements of violence against black, brown, and Jewish people, then that kill switch could be activated. if they have to redesign at great trouble, then let them begin. Fuck. People do not understand how powerful lies have become in the age of the internet. They're hugely magnified. And they lead to murders.

@nico @kissane I know. And yet they have a report button and "blanket banning" is possible. So it's not so simple. Also they could alter the software to make it possible to kill usage that is endorsing murder and / or white supremacy. That much limitation isn't crazy to ask for. In a few years, when there have been more attacks on synagogues, on black churches, on Asians and trans people and gays...you're likely to feel a bit different...

@pieist @kissane If it's impossible to exclude them completely--then it needs to be made possible. How about if they move in on your block, where you live, and start passing out leaflets about murdering Jews on your street. Would you be cool with it? But--! Freedom of speech!

@Corfiot @kissane @pieist I do like that they can use it freely. But look, if someone crashes a car into a group of people on purpose--should we limit that guy's freedom? People are being hurt by this stuff, physically, in person--it's not just talk. It leads to violence. There can be some kind of kill switch only used on special occasions. Most people would be able to keep their download as is. Or there could be some form of vetting.

@Jonathanglick @kissane If it's just open source then how is the guy coming into the version I'm in? there are obviously connections between the difference versions. Why would Mastodon be okay with these people using their resources? Words can kill.

@kissane It's not a case of just not seeing it. If Mastodon's servers are being used for this, then Mastodon can TAKE authority to prevent it. Why should they give their resources to people who endorse MASS MURDER IN SYNAGOGUES?
