The legitimacy problem touches on the why-does-god-allow problem. Why would God allow his True Church (if indeed so) to be schismed, blasphemed by those in power who hold the power to adjudicate innocence and guilt, take human life, educate the young, destroy memorials, modify languages, control the fates of nations etc etc

Was there every a time in history when God did, in fact, intervene on his own behalf?

Did the plagues and exodus happen? Did the Virgin Birth? Was the tomb empty, for real?

No I mean Christianity itself says that miraculous plagues on the Pharaoh, actually happened, and bread falling from the sky for an entire nation of people for the lifespan of an entire generation. And a woman gave birth miraculously and a dead man walked out of the tomb fully alive. These are all pretty non-negotiable in Christianity.

So why don't we see miracles of that sort when supernatural intervention would be called for? If God saved the Hebrews from the Pharaoh then why didn't He save the Constantinople from the Saracens?

Perhaps if it doesn't happen now, it didn't happen then either.

This was a New Years resolution to attend, and I skipped the entire month of February, Black History month, when I figured that every week's sermon would be more of the same.

I showed up a few times afterwards (March maybe) and I really wasn't captivated or impressed by what I heard.

In practice, though, when it's you, it's "Who shall find with fault God's elect? It is God who justifieth"

The irony was that I was raised by a Christian who had bad experiences with Christians her whole goddamn life, and never figured out she was the problem

Not Jesus's fault, of course, except is the cosmic "why does god allow" sort of way

But I'm almost 35 and I'm well aware that being a good Christian (or a saved Christian or whatever you want to call it) would not be enough to make me successful or even sane in the real world

I still think that "nirvana" (lit, a "peaceful death") is a good term to use for the process of aging gracefully without bitterness or regrets. Anyone who is calm and pleasant in their old age has attained "nirvana" whether they are Christian or Hindu or anything else

Unfortunately that's something that my parents are not modeling for me
