the right of free speech does of course not mean the right to have it published, and it's also typically curtailed in various ways depending on your jurisdiction.
but there's a philosophy behind it. the laws didn't come first. first there was the movement of free thinking during the Enlightenment Era and *then* this turned into laws.
with how the Fediverse works, and with most users having no exposure to moderation policies or how various admins implement them, it's easy to get caught up in a situation where you lose touch with good friends because of a control freak admin.
and you're not notified of it either. users don't know what they aren't seeing, and admins don't know who is blocking them or why. not without investigating and using unofficial tools that scan for blocks.
i thought reasonable people were maybe running that instance, but their rules are as long as an EULA and they block instances for reasons such as "federates with instance X", "conspiracies" and "cryptocurrency".
also, "free speech", but i understand this is synonym for "fascism" these days?
i would ignore his definition of success and focus more on what you think success is. but the answer will be the same, because if you have some kind of goal that you need to prioritise, and you need to have some kind of social circle, it makes sense that it'll largely be people who are working toward the same goal as you are.
for the record: mastodon.social does not block us (berserker.town). neither does several other quite popular instances.
usually, it's smaller instances with admins who are a bit too block happy who do it, in my experience.
one of the first things to do when moving to an instance is to check who they block. tells you a lot about who runs it.
EDIT: and yes, i should have thought to check firefish.social before signing up, except the site is very slow right now. also, i had never heard about them until today, so i figured they'd ever heard about us.
@thatguyoverthere@housepanther this is a balancing act and generally, the smaller the society/group, the greater the need to put your own needs aside to assist others, or the group just won't survive
@housepanther which is also a benzo, but you can't take that on the regular. which is what it *feels* like i need to do to function like a normal human being but it's just not possible.
@housepanther for me, there's been a gradual transition over the past few years, of drinking a whole lot of wine and liquor, to mixing carbonated water and beer to avoid getting too drunk and wasting too much money. not 100% successful. mix of forgetfulness and lack of self control - ADHD related. by most people's standards i drink a lot but it's a lot less than it used to be.
@housepanther i guess other places would call it communist. in Scandinavia they're just community/family values. Scandinavian societies are small and it makes sense to think communally.
