@housepanther people usually think of left and right but i think it's fairly accurate to think of functional small societies as being not quite either - they're communitarian

I do think if you can choose who is in your group you might be able to find ways that individual needs overlap with group needs, but at the end of the day I think a group does well when it's members are free to pursue their own needs. When everything needs to be weighed against the needs and wishes of the group everything gets political really quick. -

If a proper balance is struck then everyone's needs are met, including the most vulnerable. Too many societies are either hyper-individualistic or hyper-group with precious few recognizing that balance is healthier for all.
