What is the inherent spiritual value of knowing historical context? And does it apply to other religious history or just bible history? For example, does knowing the historical context of St Francis of Assisi have spiritual value?
-
no, im getting at the historical research done in order to understand what some jews were possibly thinking 3000 years ago and wondering if you've ever thought to yourself, "How does a materielstic approach improve my spiritual standing?" Or in words you might be more familiar with "How does reading history make me more religious?"

Tonight's programming.
Christians waste time splitting hairs over obscure ancient laws at 10
then at 11,
Are lawyers the perfection of the human being? Here's why.

Moar like
THOSE CLEVER SILLIES WHO THINK MEMORIZING HISTORICAL ARCANA IS WORTH MORE THAN A PURE HEART. NOT LIKE MY ANCESTORS WHO SHUT THOSE LOSERS UP IN MONASTERIES SO THEY DIDN'T BOTHER ANYONE WITH THEIR OCD WORD GAMES.
-
AND WHO CAN FORGET WHEN JESUS SAID YE SHALL NOT ENTER THE KINGDOM OF GOD LEST YE BECOME LIKE THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES? OR THAT WONDERFUL BIBLE STORY ABOUT HOW HE MADE THE APOSTLES MEMORIZE HIS GENEOLOGY BEFORE SENDING THEM OUT TO PREACH? ALL GOOD STUFF, ALL VERY IMPORTANT, JUST READING IT GETS YOU CLOSER TO GOD THE BOOK.
I dunno nugger, lots of people seem to think Christ becoming man, living, dying and then resurrecting was meeting us on our terms.
You can make whatever connections you want with bible verses nugger, it's just words, your thoughts are what unite it with truth. And just reading the bible won't make you love the truth more. That's painfully obvious whenever you go to church. But hey, keep holding onto that life raft that was built for you and never try to swim.
-
if you're not telling everyone how much Christianity you consume are you even a follower of Christ?
-
ok, but if i made a joke about people obsessing over changes in the understanding of pedaling a bicycle you wouldn't go off on me and call me a marcionist would you?
read the bible all you want, but when you start diagramming sentances and bringing in tendentious historical analysis in to help your "spiritual" growth you're being a little silly
-
no that's not what i asked. how did you go from historical context providing spiritual growth to reading a book in your own language?
i think we're talking past each other
-
Yes, but what you havent done is shown how that improves your spiritual state. You've only assumed it. Show me how knowing what some idiom really means has made you more virtuous.
