     I have a White anime buddy who still lives in SA. He was a cool loli-loving guy who was active in our streams, and I even got to play some games with him. Unfortunately, due to the blackouts, he has absent in my group for several months, only sporadically joining when he can. :sad

He had full time security guards, two of them were killed in a year, one of them because someone wanted to steal a TV and speaker system.
     Also told me about how groups of blacks would steal virgin white girls and rape them because they were convinced it would cure their aids. Great cultures there.

You’ll burn through all readily available campire fuel in the first 3 years, and all those cutesy solar trinkets don’t provide the sustained, consistent, reliable output you need to day-in, day-out cook 3 lbs of stuff for 2 cumulative hours

     People don’t seem to think about it, and they don’t actually give their systems a workout to see if it even works well enough. I’ve tried a couple different types and brands of that stuff, never found one that worked even half as good as a real oven

The preparation consists of buying things and tossing it under the stairs for the future. Once they’re hungry they’ll read the manual and open the box for the first time

Said he only got about a tenth of his power needs out of it at best, and after a couple years it had broken down, requiring some obscene repair cost like $20k…..not long after initially plunking down something like $65,000 for it. That was a while back though, w/ early adopters, but I never get the impression turbines are low-maintenance

     He must have installed a really large one. I've seen plenty of farms use the old fashioned wind turbines - some actually are low maintenance and actually more efficient than the modernity aesthetic counterparts. VAWT are actually really suck btw, I repost the image as a meme.
     
     The most problematic thing are the blades that get eaten up, bearings seize from dust and tornadoes seem to LOVE THEM (such expensive tastes). It is a lot of bullshit to deal with for diminished reward as opposed to making a still, getting a generator and having solid back up power - Amps is really the key figure.
     
     The only way I would install a wind turbine is if my demand was literally just keeping a series of small batteries charged to drive a digital appliance/relay/LoRa repeater. Doesn't require a lot of power.
     
     I've seen plans on how to build Axial Flux turbines and of course 3D printed blade fins you could make out of recovered PET. This could work for such relays, but why?

     it won’t power a lot but it’s enough to power some electronics if you need them.

     but even if you make it out of wood to make it easier to maintain, making that stuff at a good size to actually power things requires a lot of knowledge/skill with wood.

     the parts that are converting that kinetic energy into electric energy are going to become the harder bits to get over time.

     tbh PV solar panels would be a priority to hoard for me, they don't last forever but there's a good chance you could be charging electronics off them for half a century and maybe even powering more demanding things like pumps or golf carts enough of the time to be relatively comfortable.

     I've been looking into this almost constantly for the past few years, everything from solar molten-salt generators to nuclear batteries. You are correct, hydropower is by far the most reliable way to store and harvest energy.
     
     Wooden waterwheels are not incredibly hard to make. Unless you try to build an absolutely massive one it's going to be the kind of project you can figure out over the weekend. I'd argue it's better to build multiple small ones than one large one. Easier to scale power output up and down that way.
     
     Even if you don't have a river you can still have hydro power by building a pool elevated ~12ft above a second pool. It's basically a battery. Use your less reliable energy sources (wind, solar etc.) to pump water up to the top pool, then release it as needed through your generators. You also get free recharges every time it rains. And building out more capacity just means making the pools bigger. No need for more expensive lithium batteries.

     Yes, but they're still very very low tech. Neodymium magnets, copper wire and diodes. That's it, everything else is bells and whistles. In a pinch it's possible to get rid of the magnets and build an alternator only using copper. If things get so bad that copper wire isn't available, virtually everything you'd want electricity for is going to also become unavailable/unusable.
     
     Also, keep in mind that watermills don't just make electricity. The kinetic energy can also be used directly to power things like washing machines, mills, some machinery etc. You can also rig them up to an air compressor and store compressed air in a propane tank.
     
     Why compressed air? Pretty much every powertool you can possibly want is available off the shelf in a version that runs on compressed air. No electricity required.

     Small hydro is either very inefficient, low yields, or it's quite high tech and needs as expensive maintenance as for small wind though. Also, small water will not work when (if) river is frozen or water level is low.
     Simplest and most reliable in terms of maintenance is solar. For under 10k investment you get 2 to 4k return in electric bill. That's with grid-tied system I have and with rather high electricity costs throughout past year. We're talking about ~22 .. 24 full size 2m by 1m panels saturating at 11kW on inverter.
     For batteries, I recommend getting one salvaged from crashed EV together with it's BMS and charger. Use SimpBSM open source board to get it to charge and report the stats. It's much better than lead acid stack and it will serve longer if you do not over-heat or freeze it. Lead acid is a bitch to take care of and it will not last forever anyway. Also, as Eiregoat said, you will need to mess with Sulfuric acid and distilled water to top them up and they lose that solution by vaporizing it at charge time. So you will have slightly acidic atmosphere all over the place - not large concentrations, but still a catalyst for rust.
     Simplest way of charging EV battery module from sun is by using hybrid inverter with lead-acid charge mode with manual voltage set-point. If you have EV's pack with BMS integrated, you just use SimpBMS to signal charge on / charge off to inverter and in inverter itself you set the max charge voltage. That's it. If I am not mistaken, Fronius has this mode. And bonus with hybrid inverter is that you can still be grid tied when / if you want to and you have your AC output for your in-house infrastructure otherwise.
     
     From my own experience you get shit all yield at winter though. 3 darkest months are practically zero. IMHO the best way is to combine solar, wind and water, if you have means, real estate and location allowing for that. But large battery pack _ solar is fine too if you are in a country or state that is rich of sun and you can get enough of it in wintertime too. Australia, Spain, IDK what you have there, Amerimuts -Arzona? The important thing is how high the sun gets in sky in winter, so closer you are to Equator, better yields you get.
     
     Bottom line - battery will save you at nights and rainy fays, but not through the winter with solar. Combinations of sources are best.

     Plus, as eiregoat already mentioned, it has plenty of uses besides electricity generation.

     When I made my comment, I was thinking more towards being able to (if you know how/can figure it out) to build the thing yourself with local resources with not too much processing done.

You can use a lot less fuel to stay warm if you dump a lot of heat into a large thermal mass with a short, hot burn, then let the thermal mass release the heat for the next 12 hours.
     
     People have largely forgotten these things are even an option because we've been spoiled with abundant energy for so long.
