@Gargron Oofff. I hope you never used Google Translate because I wouldn't want you to lose your self-respect.
What a dumb take.

@nixCraft As a programmer.. How should that make me feel fearful? If ML systems can actually do (most) of the programming that would be great, right? We'd need fewer programmers meaning the excess programmers could be retrained and provide value elsewhere in society. Which is good considering increasing demographic pressure.
How come when coal miners become redundant we say 'don't whine, get retrained', but when programmers or professional artists do it's a tragedy?
@sykora @aral Are you suggesting every company should always guarantee everyone's job even if they're working on something, and their area of expertise is somewhere, where there's no economic value being added?
That would make for more of a charity than anything else. Obviously companies have to eliminate certain jobs at times to make sure they focus on adding value. And they can do so humanely, that's okay.
@sykora @aral I'm not sure Mozilla has ever taken VC money? I mean... It can't even give out shares. Not even sure how that works.
And again, not a charity.
Some people will find new jobs internally. Some won't. Firing someone is no worse than -not- hiring the other, more suitable person that you could have hired for the position you placed someone in so you wouldn't have to fire them.
Also unemployment is still historically low in most of the Global North. Median unemployment 8.3 weeks.
@arstechnica I mean.. This seems disingenuous. Creating Firearm based on OS components/designs is perfectly possible. Yet it wouldn't keep us (at least you know, sane people outside of NA) from banning them.
You can make it illegal for people to have stuff on them, it's no magic bullet but it helps fighting certain types of crime.
@nixCraft Any sane person to any human being on the planet: Don't take Linus too seriously. He can't help himself.
@Gargron Wait... Really? This is where you draw the line? I mean.. I'm happy, don't get me wrong..
I'm just sort of fascinated that after years of lying, deeply anticompetitive practices, vendor lock-in and deep hostility to the open web and free software... (Not to mention mediocre products, but that's more subjective)
This is the straw that broke the Camel's back?
Happy to hear it though.
@arstechnica Uh.. But these are loans. This means that eventually these get repaid, when someone buys products from said companies... and then we're going to count the emissions again.
This seems like very dodgy accounting to me..
@aral Early info suggests this may very well not have been an Israeli strike.
While there's plenty wrong with Israel's response. Now is a time when helping spread disinformation is especially unwise.
