I'll go on tabulating what software the worst offenders of the Fediverse are using:

The troll software of choice is clearly Pleroma followed by Mastodon.

But no Misskey or Friendica!

If we're doing a running tally of Fediverse trolls' software of choice, it's:

1. Pleroma - 14 instances
2. Mastodon - 6 instances

I haven't been able to find any instances that run on any other kind of Fediverse software.

No Misskey, no Friendica, no Epicyon, etc.

What's more, most software preferred by trolls doesn't support quotes.

If QTs were so effective at trolling, why don't they use Friendica (supports quotes) instead of Pleroma (doesn't support quotes)?

Thinking about how TWO devices that I own are “obsolete"—not because the hardware has kicked the bucket—but because Google simply doesn’t want to provide security updates for them.

And now that I think about it, it’s all so wasteful.

Here’s a strange thought for you. I own a Sony Walkman that was made decades ago. It still plays NEW cassettes sold on Bandcamp. The device is probably ~30-years-old.

None of these Android phones will be usable in 30 years.

Some people believe there's no purpose to "liking" something on Mastodon since it doesn't affect any algorithm.

Not the case.

It does something incredibly valuable: it acknowledges people.

Which is incredibly powerful, and is all the more important *because* it's not connected to gaming any algorithm.

By liking something on Mastodon, you are doing it honestly -- without any agenda at play other than that you like it.

So go ahead. Click that like button for its own sake.

Another Twitter Co-Founder, @biz@macaw.social, joined the Fediverse last month.

He also has an account at @biz@me.dm that was registered 12 days ago.

I sense that Twitter Co-Founders are planning something with the Fediverse.

That's actually obvious since me.dm is an instance operated by Medium.

But I have a suspicion that they're planning on being more ambitious.

@ev doesn't ask questions like this unless there's more lofty goals in mind.

For the past year, I've been saying that VCs are watching the Fediverse very closely.

They haven't been acting on anything because they're seeking validation.

But when @ev and @biz join the Fediverse in a VERY public fashion, then that validates the Fediverse in their eyes.

I mean @Gargron has already turned down VC money, and has opted to continue operating Mastodon as a non-profit.

Good for him.

But if you want Mastodon to continue to operate beyond VC meddling, it's important that you all donate both to the folks building Fediverse software *and* to your local instance (if it's volunteer-run).

Don't take the current Fediverse for granted.

Also, if you want to build out the Fediverse and get compensated for your efforts, do it.

We don't have to choose between giant tech companies and volunteer hobbyists.

We don't have to pursue surveillance capitalism.

If someone has the ability, offer services to others who need help.

Why not run a mom and pop operation on the Fediverse?

@qurlyjoe Anyone can start an instance. That game goes both ways.

A billionaire can start an instance, but so can you.

A billionaire can buy capacity, but he can't buy friends 🙂

This is the year that the Fediverse overtakes the Metaverse.

Medium should be applauded for starting a Mastodon instance (me.dm).

Far better that they run their own instance than piggyback on a volunteer-run instance. Which was what they were doing previously (medium@mstn.social).

Every for-profit corporation should be running their own instance. That should be the norm.

Is this a "win" for the Fediverse? No -- and people like @aral are right to be skeptical. I share that skepticism.

Nevertheless, this is a step in the right direction.

Two weeks ago, I told you that @reiver and I (and others) are building a Fediverse app.

I haven't yet told you its name.

If you literally arrived on the Fediverse a month ago, you have no business gatekeeping who's on the Fediverse.

Not that anyone who arrived 5 years ago has any business gatekeeping either.

But if you arrived a month ago, you *really* no have business gatekeeping who's on the Fediverse.

My opinion on Mastinator: I don't get it!

I've tried to figure out how this service works, and it's confusing as hell!

It advertises "disposable public anonymous no-login Fediverse accounts." Which sounds scary.

But then you can't send posts!

And I've never actually been able to successfully follow any account either.

Which makes me wonder—why not use RSS instead? Mastodon already supports that.

Bottom line—if I'm having trouble with this, I don't think anyone else is faring well.

So many people asked me about Mastinator.

While I have no doubt that there's shady stuff going on, and @aral has good reason to put it on Fediblock, I also think it's not that good from a pure product perspective.

What's the pitch here? What's the actual need that it serves?

It implies that a "toot" works, but I have my doubts.
