I just saw three people jogging outside and it inspired me to get up and close the blinds.

So if someone with a couple billion $ lying around tricks out a server with mega capacity all around, and plops it down somewhere, they can make their own “rules” I guess? What does something like that do to the general ambience of the fediverse? Maybe a bunch of em do it. I don’t know enough about how any of it works to know if that’s a threat in some way. From my little cubbyhole it feels like a threat. -

But a billionaire would be more interested in profiting from an instance, I’d presume.Ok, I get that the ethos is such that ads are anathema to the fediverse, but are there “official rules” somewhere that definitively prohibit ads sold solely to offset the cost of hosting an instance. If an instance offered some sort of token—say a check mark, for example—for a fee, is that something that would be tolerated? Or would they be laughed off the planet?
