indeed an accurate description of how it works in germany. state doesn't care if you are really in need or really have to fear for your life in where you are from. you only have to belong to whatever group is declared as oppressed today.

russian soldiers who deserted don't get asylum because they are russians. every former DAESH from middle east is welcome here. they get some years comfy german jail at most, because clearly you can't send them back - after all their life would be at risk!!!1

otoh i do think the gaza stuff really is too much this time though. we already have a weird left-right querfront over gaza.

in any case, all of these topics are of no day to day importance to most people in the west. covid, gaza, the "climate catastrophe", ukraine war, etc. have either no relevance or aren't actionable in any way for the common people in the west.

yet they are highly divisive and people are willing to throw away any social capital they have over these things.
