There are plenty of field mice, snakes, chipmunks, squirrels, and lizards of unusual size in the area. I've seen plenty of foxes before, so the area is pretty healthy with prey items.
I've also seen plenty of owls there, but they were always Great horned or Burrowing owls. I had not heard a barn owl before, so I was unprepared for it's nightmarish call.
In fact, I don't think I'll go to the spot tonight because I'm worried that I might have disturbed the area too much over the past week. Hopefully the owls returns and will surprise me (or I them) some other night. -
Anime Wong (elliptica@poa.st)'s status on Friday, 09-Aug-2024 02:33:55 JST Anime Wong No owl last night.
Instead, there was someone already in my spot. He was (is? why does it feel strange to say 'is' instead of 'was'... whatever) a photographer who dropped his keys or something. Of course, we're about 50 miles from the nearest major or even minor city, no moon, and it's 11pm, so it's pitch black out there, so he had flashlight. Might have scared away the owl. Kind of a shame, I bought a real tape recorder to get a high def recording. Maybe the owl will be back tonight.

Anime Wong (elliptica@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2024 14:45:48 JST Anime Wong @ArdainianRight @PraxisOfEvil A while back I read "Julian's Gods" which was about the pagan revival at the tail end of the Roman Empire. I walked away thinking that Julian the Apostate was very much a Trump-like, or maybe especially a Hitler-like figure. Men are nostalgic for a world that might never have existed, who sense a decline in their old values, and want to revive it, but ultimately fail.
This might be why conservatives almost always fail. When things that can't easily be unfucked get fucked, what exactly can you do? You have to rebuild it from scratch something that already died. It's necromancy. -

Anime Wong (elliptica@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 16-Jul-2024 03:40:46 JST Anime Wong @Aviz @Meemoo The Japanese are ultra naive. You know how libertarians honestly believe "everyone is a rational actor"? The Japanese are also like this, but a billion times worse. They all believe that everyone will more or less do what's expected of them.
So they don't understand why a person paid to do a job would do it wrong on purpose, in the same way that you don't understand why a black guy won't follow simple instructions during a police encounter. -

The oldest Buddhist temples in Mongolia are about 30 years old, sitting on the rubble destroyed by the communists. China has very little archeological history, the communists destroyed it all. Vietnam is desperate to restore cultural traditions and practices that were obliterated by the communists. It's the same everywhere they went. That the USSR improved at all near the fall is the point, the USSR fundamentally could not coexist with those improvements.
America sucks, but it does not make the USSR based. Both suck. -

Anime Wong (elliptica@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 06-Jul-2024 03:51:00 JST Anime Wong Name: Cygnus Loop
Constellation: Cygnus
Ahh, it's been two months!!!!
Cygnus Loop is a massive nebula complex, the apparent size of about 40 full moons. Technically, this picture is only of half the loop; the Eastern Veil Nebula is on the left, and Pickering's Triangle on the right. A bit of the Western Veil is visible at the bottom right.
The complex is so large that it does not have one specific discoverer. William Herschel generally gets the credit for the complex, though much of it's details, like Pickering's Triangle, were discovered photographically in the late 1800's. Still, the Veil's are easily visible, even in small telescopes.
The complex is a supernova remnant, left overs of a massive star that exploded tens of thousands of years ago. But the whole constellation of Cygnus is teeming with nebula, as it's right on the "rift" of the Milky Way. You could spend hours looking at it through a telescope, searching for nebula. For that reason Cygnus, along side Pegasus and Scorpius, are my favorite constellations.
What I love about the Cygnus loop is it's colors. They're highly separated in a way that almost looks fake (which is probably why ILNP named a nail polish after it). This is a characteristic of most remnants, but for whatever reason, Cygnus really stands out.
