The Catholic church was very adept at accruing and amassing power, for the good of Europe and Christianity at large, sure, but many of their actions were not what I’d say was holy in basis, and we see they continue with this trend into the modern day for better or worse. They are a mortal political force, It is difficult to see much in the way of divine guidance or spiritual health in a lot of their decisions.
