Things may be a little different up north, I don't know how their DA's offices or sheriff's departments work, but LA and Orange County are the last places in the US that I'd want to get prosecuted for anything. California's a huge state, they don't seem to say anything about what county this kid's from.

Criminal justice doesn't work quite the way you might imagine in this state. I mean, there were two propositions on the ballot a couple of years ago: one to eliminate the death penalty in the state, and one to eliminate most of the appeals for death row inmates, and the first one failed hard, the second one passed by a huge spread, at least 15 points.

I've dealt with the LA County DA's office much more directly than I'd like to have done, and if anything, they're basically the opposite of what you seem to expect. DA Cooley got in trouble for his use of conviction rates for promotions (nothing came of it) and pushing somewhat aggressive over-charging (the shotgun approach), and he got three terms, his campaign ads were all "My dad was an FBI agent and I swear to aggressively prosecute everyone!" LASD's Office of Internal Review is a complete fucking joke. (Then there's all this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynwood_Vikings . And that's not ancient history, Tanaka was Assistant Sheriff until 2011.) County lockup was bad enough that the feds got involved, so Tanaka and former sheriff Baca are both in prison. After him, Villanueva defied court orders to clean up the deputy gangs, covering up beatdowns in county jail, more of the same. (I don't know much about the new guy but I'd be astonished if things are different.) LA might have a higher rate of "write down that he was resisting arrest" than most small towns.

Orange County is basically Karens that think jaywalkers should get the death penalty, so that's how they vote down there. I imagine you come out of lockup with all your teeth but still not the kind of place you wanna deal with the criminal justice system. Other than LA ("law and order") and Orange County, the only heavily populated counties are in the SF Bay Area or San Diego (navy town).

  The Lynwood Vikings is one of the many deputy gangs of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD), appearing to meet the legal definition of a gang when taking into account the department's repeated illegal conduct. The Vikings, formerly based at the now-defunct Lynwood station, are composed of sworn deputy sheriffs in the LASD.The Vikings' roster of previous members boasts some high-ranking law enforcement names such as Paul Tanaka, the former Deputy Sheriff who held the second top position within the LASD, as well as Lee Baca, who was the former Los Angeles Sheriff. Additionally, it is alleged that Robert Norris, who is serving as the Sheriff of Kootenai County, was also a member of the Vikings. After lawsuits repeatedly surfaced concerning the group's activities, the Vikings were described by federal judge Terry Hatter as a "neo-Nazi, white supremacist gang" engaged in racially motivated hostility. The 1992 Kolts Commission report stated there was a lack of evidence of racist deputy gangs, but that some Viking deputies did engage in brutality and ganglike activity. Basically when it crashed, it said "Memory failure: 0xfca3a4: already hardware poisoned". I don't know what would make the kernel hand that memory to a process if it's already poisoned.

Anyway, reasonable idea would be to just pop the bad stick instead of trying to hack around it in software.

Okay, are we alive?

If we stay alive, it is because the shit I guessed was correct. Got I/O errors attempting to use memory hotplug. The memory failure subsystem (/usr/src/linux-*/Documentation/ABI/testing/sysfs-memory-page-offline) worked, but I'm not entirely certain I got the addresses right; often, mcelog and dmesg and /sys have different opinions on what an address is. But no MCEs, no problems, everything seems fine, and the VM hasn't had an aneurysm yet, so I guess it's cool.

I look forward to forgetting what I typed that fixed it by the next time something retarded happens and the machine reboots.

DB server rebooted, and no idea why that occurred. Came back up partially, I had to do a thing manually because when we moved to the new host, which I did in a hurry because Vultr isn't too big on freedom, and I forgot to update part of the config when that occurred.
