@dangillmor As much as the #fediblock crowd likes to bray on about how they're helping make the fediverse more inclusive, in reality they're gatekeeping a network that they see as some sort of secret club.
They want the network inclusive, but only for "the right people". That's not inclusive.
You don't lift people up by putting others down. Period. @kissane
Thank god I don't have cancer or sth, like seriously.
Yeah, you forgot about that, didn't you? In the United States, saying someone doesn't deserve to work is not only saying they don't deserve food or shelter, but also healthcare.
Why don't I deserve these things? What can I do to earn them back?
@elisse Assume everything you send in a work email or on a work chat is
1) Going to be read out loud, by you, in open court 2) Going to be parsed by an unthinking automation working in HR 3) Going to be parsed by an AI used by the unthinking automation working in HR
Until every US citizen has a job, the correct number of work visas is *zero*.
Other people can come here for guaranteed work. Fine. But then where the actual fuck do I go? Where do I belong?
That's why I can't get too sad over the people Elon fired. "they'll have to go home!" like yeah... They weren't guaranteed a gig any more than I am. You'll notice nobody ever cried for me.
"There an interactible labor shortage! We can't find Linux engineers for any amount of money! We'll take anybody at this point, they don't even need to know how to use a computer!"
"Hi, I'm a Linux engineer with multiple years of professional experience and over a decade of personal experience. I can start tomorrow."
Recruiters love you until you turn 20. Then you're not interesting to them anymore.
That's why they're willing to hire zoomers for sysadmin roles when they don't even know what ssh or a virtual machine is. They want youth, not competence.
If you want a career that will last past your teens, don't go into IT. There are no available IT jobs. I'm the proof.
"How can I possibly talk to my friends without Zuckerberg listening in?"
Idk maybe use something other than public posts, on your public profile visible with no authentication, inside a decentralized social media network?
Just a thought. Advertisers and the like were crawling fedi literally the entire time. Just because someone didn't make a press release about it doesn't mean it's not happening.
Like, suddenly being upset your public posts are being used by Facebook, because they made a fedi instance...
It's a bit like giving a speech to a stadium of 40,000 but getting in a huff halfway in, because you noticed the tally light on a camera that was on the whole time.
@coin No, they said my "clothers" were bad and that I should buy a nice suit. Then they bragged that they got a gig with a 6 week "boot camp" cert and that the reason I'm not getting callbacks is because I play video games.
As a reminder, tech is *not* a "flourishing industry" nor is it "in demand"
I've submitted over 3,000 resumes since 2018. In that time I've gotten zero callbacks. This is with years of experience being a top performer. That's roughly how "in demand" tech is.
Coercing your children to play with STEM toys won't guarantee them a place in this saturated field. Skills certainly didn't guarantee me one.
