Okay so a little side quest, I discovered this software scene of FOSS remakes of classic trackers and samplers. The most notable is 16Bit Bugsby's Fasttracker 2 clone for Win/Mac/Linux. I was immediately impressed by this trackers sound engine, which is almost just as good as renoise, you can listen here I took an old, old .xm file and brought it back to life with some mastering tools I own the Shadow Hills Mastering Class Compressor plugin. Let me know what you think, the track gives me a SNES jrpg vibe for sure
