@nixCraft one time as kids, separated from our computer for a weekend and before the advent of smartphones, we attempted to write machine code on paper to be directly input on our calculator via a hex editor

an early attempt instead crashed the calculator, which erased the hex editor, so we weren't able to continue. ah well. it was a fun diversion

@jwz also we asked around and there are exactly two major brands of these and neither of them connects directly to wifi in normal operation. doesn't mean it's impossible, but it does seem relevant.

at the risk of stating the obvious

caring about ethics costs more time and money than not caring about ethics

when people are against ethics - in so many words! - it's not some grand visionary revelation they're sharing. they want more money. there's nothing more to it than that.

@dragestil @coolboymew dunno who did it exactly but it grew out of Lisp mailing lists about twenty years ago, and was a sincere attempt to promote the language. the tagline to go with it was "made with secret alien technology"

@foone we were discussing this with friends recently and they pointed out that maybe the software itself is in the library of congress, or its UK equivalent. you do a lot of archival so we assume you've already checked that, but we figured we'd mention it. we'd really love to see the system preserved.

@supernovae @rodhilton @tchambers so like. the thing about hardened security posture is ... WHO does it make safe, and from what? the community doesn't need help from an organization known for bragging about its uncaring attitude to this stuff

@supernovae @rodhilton @tchambers we spent a LOT of time thinking about that when it happened, because we were working on advertising privacy at Google at the time, ie. it was our personal responsibility to not let it happen and we felt like we'd failed

(we eventually decided we'd done our best and there was a reason it was primarily Facebook being used for these abuses, but anyway we're mentioning this so you understand where we're coming from)

@supernovae @rodhilton @tchambers so the thing about some of the harms from mass surveillance is that in many cases they are harms that apply when the software is working PROPERLY

the Cambridge Analytica stuff, yes, there were small elements of it which arguably violated Facebook's terms of service but the worst elements of it were entirely within the security model.

@supernovae @rodhilton @tchambers there are a fuckton of amazing information privacy and security professionals on the fediverse, many of us more than happy to donate our time to any community-driven efforts that seem open to our input. many of us currently or previously employed at these same megacorps, so it's not like the megacorps are in a unique position to offer this expertise. it's the workers' experience, after all, not the companies'.
