@tchambers You'll get a subset of activity this way for sure, but I'm trying to point out you can get almost all of it in a virtually undetectable way just by standing up a quiet instance.

Irenes (many) (irenes@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 29-Jun-2023 16:42:33 JST Irenes (many) @supernovae @rodhilton @tchambers there are a fuckton of amazing information privacy and security professionals on the fediverse, many of us more than happy to donate our time to any community-driven efforts that seem open to our input. many of us currently or previously employed at these same megacorps, so it's not like the megacorps are in a unique position to offer this expertise. it's the workers' experience, after all, not the companies'.
Machismo repeated this. -

the Cambridge Analytica stuff, yes, there were small elements of it which arguably violated Facebook's terms of service but the worst elements of it were entirely within the security model.

Irenes (many) (irenes@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 29-Jun-2023 16:42:34 JST Irenes (many) @supernovae @rodhilton @tchambers we spent a LOT of time thinking about that when it happened, because we were working on advertising privacy at Google at the time, ie. it was our personal responsibility to not let it happen and we felt like we'd failed
(we eventually decided we'd done our best and there was a reason it was primarily Facebook being used for these abuses, but anyway we're mentioning this so you understand where we're coming from)

WHO does it make safe, and from what? the community doesn't need help from an organization known for bragging about its uncaring attitude to this stuff

supernovae (supernovae@universeodon.com)'s status on Thursday, 29-Jun-2023 16:42:35 JST supernovae @rodhilton @tchambers Ironically, with Meta joining and hopefully engaging in the FEP process, they have the engineering, design and UX experience to help recommend ways to improve fedi security posture.
I'd love to see at least 2 personas get "institutionalized" - a Public persona and private persona and from there - have your engagement/prvicay/controls be constrained by those personas.
Meta does an excellent job here, so i hope we can help bias them towards FEPs (fediverse enhancements)
BTW, we admins and developers shared this on our call with them.

supernovae (supernovae@universeodon.com)'s status on Thursday, 29-Jun-2023 16:43:08 JST supernovae I deleted most of my github issues on mastodon because the snark was off the charts from people that looked like cats, princesses, and video game characters.
I mostly lurk on the FEPs now
i'll be honest, talking with meta was fresh air because i was talking with engineers that had a common goal.
We don't have that luxury here and that frustrates the shit out of just about everyone - like me deleting my github issues because no matter what anyone says or does - its wrong.
i'm happy to collaborate with anyone.
likes this.
